Katsushi Kobayashi has recently been added to the FreeBSD team so that he can add IEEE 1394 support to FreeBSD 5.0. Get more information here and here.
Good to see that FreeBSD is getting IEE1394 support. It’s about time that FreeBSD has support for these devices. A lot of other platforms have had support for a while now.
I would like to see significant improvements in the installer program. When it comes to istalling the bootloader and other slice-related activities, the install program is a joke. I would really like the BSD core team to take a hint from the latest linux installer programs and how they set up the system. I for one would instanly move to BSD if for no other reason than to leave behind dependency hell.
actually if i recall correctly there is going to be a new installer system for FreeBSD 5…one which is library-based so that people can write new easy-to-use install programs for FreeBSD
Wouldn’t this just be an easy to port from Darwin?
Admittedly, drivers are not as dynamic in FreeBSD as opposed to Darwin (Kexts), but most of the work is done (BSD on PPC). I do not know if this would be a practical starting point for x86.
Hurray! No I’ll be able to connect all those fire wire devices that I don’t have to my BSD machines!

Ideas anyone?
Mike
cool!
Finally, I will be able to use my OS of choice.
Until OB is finished anyway.
Read the Apple open source license and you’ll learn a lot.
The IEEE1394 drivers are implemented using the IOKit on Darwin.
