Both nVidia (also nForce) and Ati have released beta versions of their driver packages for Windows Vista, both client and server editions. ActiveWin also has a list of drivers included in Vista beta 1.

nVidia drivers are just a quick fix to the LDDM problem. They are not complete drivers, no nVidia control pannel and no SLI support.
Right now, for Vista, ATI drivers are better and more complete.
I wish they’d show the same enthusiastic support for Linux…
Right on. At least nVidia’s drivers are somewhat up to par with their Windoze drivers, but with ATI…
That's so true, especcially for ATI. Instead of releasing BETA drivers for BETA OSes, they should improve/work on Linux, BSD, ones…
NVidia does, ATi is getting there.
I wish they’d show the same enthusiastic support for Linux…
Nvidia’s Linux support rocks. On Ubuntu, I open Synaptic, install nvidia-glx (and nvidia-settings if I want to get the nvidia control panel) and then I change 2 lines in a config file and it is done. Works perfectly. I get just as good performance out of my GeForce FX 5200 on Linux as I do on Windows. America’s Army and other such games work perfectly.
On SUSE, theoretically, it should be just as easy, but Novell screwed up the Nvidia install script so you have to do it manually with 9.3 (I’m not the only one who noticed this problem). But Novell is busy killing SCO for us so I’ll forgive them
I’m now running CentOS 4.1 (rebuild of RHEL4 Update 1) with the Nvidia drivers manually installed from http://www.nvidia.com and it still works just as good.
I’m tired of their stupid proprietary hardware. All their arguments for not releasing the specs for their last gen cards are pure bullshit. And don’t get me started on their nforce shit. I’m never doing business with them again until I can run FreeBSD without corrupting my kernel with their proprietary shit. Go ATI, their 9200 cards works perfectly fine on my AMD64 box, with 100% free software.
Can you say extremist… I can understand wanting support for what you paid for, but everyone does not believe in open source. In the same way I respect your thoughts on the subject, I respect ATI and nVidia’s views on the issue as well.
Maybe one day we would have to use proprietary drivers with our hardware, but now we do. Give it time.
Umm dude, it takes alot of monopolizing to be dubbed “the new Microsoft”.
Yeah, like ATI are releasing their specs. Unless you consider 9200s as last gen cards… Anyway, my experience with that open-source driver on my Mobility Radeon 9000 wasn’t extraordinary.
Do they release specs for their Radeon Xpress chipsets?
linux driver support is fantastic. try that. freebsd is nice, but linux offers 99% of what freebsd does with better hardware support for large manufacturers like nvidia and ati
The nvidia Linux driver is great, i’ve never had any system lockups. Maybe people should point the finger at distros i.e Fedora always breaking nvidia driver. Slackware is just solid and other distros should follow it.
Amen to that. For exactly the same reasons, I’ve bought a Radeon 9250 too. It’s the latest video card for which there are specs.
And it doesn’t matter whether you “believe in open source” or not. It’s about being dependent on a single vender.
We’ve had that problem with newer ATI cards on amd64, or on ppc; even those who were willing to run non-free software couldn’t as ATI hadn’t released any drivers and they were on ATI’s mercy.
NVidia does very well, considering they don’t earn much money doing so… But ATI will lack behind for years to come, even if they really turn into best-effort-mode
Where is the 64bit Driver for nVidia cards? Im on Vista x64 and see no fancy glass-effects on my FX5900XT
Using the default installed drives without ANY tweeking or tuning shows all the cool new effects.
Hi ,
First of all ATI is the #1 windows video card both in driver and in card ( according to every specialist in the industry and the vendor who choose there car to ship as default on the computer oem ( dont give me the bulshit you ordered a Nvidia card with your computer its called a tailor made solution and you choose the card it absolutely not the same thing.) This on desktop , mobile solution and even cell phone and gaming platform.
Yes , ATI driver 2 – 3 years ago where really shitty on windows and some release are buggy with some game , thats entirely due to the game extreme use of some specifity ( some are MADE for the other company ( Nvidia , Matrox , SIS , etc … ), last I Looked you can make the card run in a specific way for a specific game and switch to another type of option when your not playing the game. Most people are unaware of it or too idiot to configure the card properly.
Now the new Catalyst Driver are excellent and better then the Forceware and this is according to all the specialist and benchmark
Now About GNU/Linux driver. Where getting a bad deal , look at how many driver Nvidia and ATI are working on for the next release that will be coming out in september from the GNU/Linux distributions , anser , none , they dont allocate the same budget and the same importance. There is even some newer card from both company that the proprietary driver have been out for windows for months ( 6 ) and have no porprietary driver at all for GNU/Linux.
About Open source , Last time I looked Both ATI and Nvidia Driver are based of Open Source driver , Listen this is important because I am talking about there proprietary offer not there free software offer ( Nvidia as none anyway ) , Open Source is shitty alone , some Open Source license ( BSD Style and many other , I mention this because the proprietary of both are based of X server wich as a BSD type license ). Every Software that exist whas mad of Open Source , exept some Open source license are not real Open Source they allow for the closing of the source from company who had nothing to do with the creation of the software.
Now its not to say that the GNU/Linux community is not at fault , there is absolutely no one really funding the free driver and paying for a real full team of Video driver developper , the one doing the Free driver are contributor and mostly free contributor , they make up the majority 10 000 to 1 , its the 1 that is doing most of the work as he is an expert but the 10 000 are also helping a bit but are not full blown expert.
Thats the reality we live in we pay for Graphic card , we pay for the driver , but they keep the spec they invent way to prevent anylisis and in some Republic ( The United States of America , look out encryption law and reverse engineering law in the us ) the company who own the politician have passed law who forbade for people to study and anaylise what they paid for.
Which is the Card , the spec and the driver , but because of illegal contract that no one signed or agreed to , we are stuck with not beeing able to enjoy what we paid for and some of us worked for in our youth because no one told us Open Source license could be closed ( Hey its Open source its suppose to stay Open , and I dont care I made the software and own the right well look here they took my softwar added to it and are not sharing any of the improvment on my software back ).
Is it there right to do so ? No , its illegal , your entitled to everything you have paid for , exept the governement is working for them , and is accomplice of those thieves against there own population.
The Problem is that Both Open Source and Free Software definition allow for some closing or source and software.
Open Source allow for Open Source license to close the source , where it should be there to absolutely prevent it.
Free Software (as in freedom) allow some free software license ( as in freedom ) to have the software closed when there goal and very existence is to have free software.
So thats the exact reality today , the problem could be solved but you need to change both the current Open Source definition certification to remove all those who permit closing of the source. Also do the same for free software definition and certification and remove the possibility of a free software to be closed and allowed by the license. Thats the first problem
The second one is we need to all reach in our wallet and each and every user of GNU/Linux give 100$ each for the creation of a real free company like Mandriva that is cored in the corporation creation paper that its there to create GNU/GPL open Source Driver and nothing else and after we have 2 billion ( wich is peanut if you look at the Nivdia and Ati conglomerate ( Nvidia only make chipset and no card but have hundreds of company makeing cards withe there chipset and resarch and ATI at least does there own card , but also have hundreds of comapny who use there chips as base for there cards.) Or if 2 Billion allow it we pass a vote and acquire control of ati and buy them up from the inside and use the ATI made profit to buy up Nvidia and free it too.
Otherwise we will still be at the same place in 5 years , its a war and make not mistake we are winning but we can too start to be not really nice and buy them up and dump there stock on purpose , its who as the ownership who is the one in control.
Would it not be nice that we buy ATI and make people decide to make windows people pay for there drivers , unlike them who dont even make driver for us.
Note : you will see many liar and thief say that they dont care about Open Source , but when you start asking and paying and demanding for Real Open Source they are the one opposing it. If you really dont care dont discuss it you dont care …. Me I care and when I pay I demand Real Open Source GPL software , because in reality nothing else is winning and nothing else is really Free Software and Open Source.
Thanks , thats what I add to inform you of.
Have a nice day.
haha
linux fanboys and their bottom-of-the-line video cards.
whats wrong nerds?
can’t afford the $$$ to buy better cards?
what a joke.
yeah. you linux fuckhead’s opinions are really respected. tightarses.
It’s got noting to do with Linux, people come into my shop and buy these cards as well for windows.
Not everyone needs a top spec card to play games, but I have a GeForceFX 5900Ultra and i plays both UT2004 and UT on Linux and it’s much better than in Windows fps wise.
Another thing is that nvidia release the linux driver with updated support even before Windows on last release.
OMG are you a ATI zealot. First of all 9200 series is freaking old !!! When will ATI release specs for the 9500, 9600, 9700, 9800, R400+,series of cards or the Radeon Xpress chipset ? Answer NEVER ! So shut it. ATI drivers as everyone knows are half-baked alpha drivers that usually do not work as intended and have broken features. At least I can install and use Nvidia drivers in Linux with very little problems and have them be useful.
Put down the crack pipe. ATI drivers on windows and linux are tripe pieces of monkey coded turd. I’ve owned both ATI and Nvidia cards and Nvidia by far has the most stable drivers out on both platforms that work with the lastest versions of their hardware. Every single ATI driver released is either fixing something that was broken in the previous release or introducing a game stoping bug in the drivers in pc game software. Anyone in the know will verify that out side of 2d preformance ATI is a second class card compared to Nvidia’s stable and reliable 3d preformance in game.
I’ve got an Nvidia nForce 4 motherboard which isn’t supported even by Windows XP Service Pack 2 – yes, you have to download the drivers from nvidia.com (great, when the nForce 4 onboard ethernet isn’t work! Linux dual-boot to the rescue – yep, Linux supports nForce 4 out of the box !).
Looking at that Vista Beta 1 list of drivers, I’m shocked to that *yet again* the nForce 4 still isn’t supported “out-of-the-box” and you have to download the drivers from nvidia.com (chicken and egg part 2). Why is that the current and future versions of Windows don’t support a common motherboard and yet Linux does?
Of course, I’m guessing that eventually (hopefully Beta 2), Vista will include built-in support for nForce 4 – and maybe we’ll see something similar with an XP Service Pack 3, but at this exact moment in time, it’s embarrassing for Microsoft and Nvidia that I have to use a rival OS to get the drivers for a popular motherboard…
The problem with the current beta drivers from ATI for Vista are that it’s -only- the display drivers. If you’re hoping to see any of the pretty glass effects or anything you’ll have to wait. Sure, it does what it’s promised (accelerate the desktop drawing in 2D mode) but at this point it’s a letdown for me. (I have a Radeon 9800XT AGP, if your experiances differ from mine please let me know)
