“Theo announced on -misc today that work is in progress to add G5 support to the macppc port. G5 machines will be running in 32-bit mode but there is the possibility of a macppc64 port to follow to take advantage of these 64-bit processors. All Apple models are being targetted (iMac, Power Mac, and Xserve) so if you have such a machine and wish to run OpenBSD NetBSD OpenBSD on it, your dreams are about to come true. As Theo stresses, this is very much a work in progress and not everything is supported or stable at this point in time.”
OpenBSD ? NetBSD
I don’t think that OpenBSD’s team is porting NetBSD to PPC.
Thom, you must understand what are You writing about. Theo De Raadt is the leader of OpenBSD community, not NetBSD.
The info is on openbsd-misc mailing list.
You must make correction
Thom, you shouldn’t have commit access to a news magazine if you write such a crap. Except the website got owned and somebody was very funny… hah hah.
btw.: If NetBSD would announce that “Support for MacPPC G5 is in progress” it would probably take ages (approx. until 2010) until the final release. I guess OpenBSD will have stable G5 support in 3.9, cool! Thanks Theo!

Sorry if I mixed them up, I’m only human. Don’t get your panties in a twist over this.
You still need to fix the logo…
But you hold others to the fire for making mistakes on their web sites…. even after they fixed them. If you can’t take the heat when you make mistakes don’t you dare ever say anything to anyone else ever again.
If you can’t take the heat
But I can. However, that does not mean I cannot explain how I made the mistake, and that it is not something to twist a panty about.
A long time ago Theo did work on the NetBSD project. Hey he even made the old logo. I would like to see
netbsd have ppc 970 ( macppc, s390, and others) but I think what is needed is for some one to donate a g5 to the netbsd group.
m.
OpenBSD != NetBSD.
Hard to understand for you NetBSD guys, isn’t it?! After nearly 10 years there’s a real difference between these two projects. People, code, quality, …
Hard for you OpenBSD guys to understand why Theo was booted in the first place, isn’t it?!
Because of dickhead attitudes like your own.
People in NetBSD are definitely less arrogant.
Code in NetBSD is know to be the cleanest and most organized of any OS.
Quality in NetBSD is know to be the best as well.
What are you saying here?
Idiot.
> Hard for you OpenBSD guys to understand why Theo was booted in the first place, isn’t it?!
It’s 2005, noone cares anymore.
> Because of dickhead attitudes like your own.
Yeah, that’ll show ’em who is less arrogant!
> People in NetBSD are definitely less arrogant.
> Code in NetBSD is know to be the cleanest and most organized of any OS.

I beg to differ on all of those accounts but that’s what choice is about.
“Hard to understand for you NetBSD guys, isn’t it?! After nearly 10 years there’s a real difference between these two projects. People, code, quality, …”
Most of the macppc port of OpenBSD is based on NetBSD, with little differences other than moving stuff between files and renaming stuff, plus OpenBSD’s “security through obfuscation” approach to code. The easiest way to get code into OpenBSd is to get it committed to NetBSD first.
In case Theo claims down the road to have done this before NetBSD and to be saving the world in spite of ourselves, here’s the dmesg Tsubai Masanari posted for an Apple G5:

That’s kind of insulting man.
OSAlert seems to be trying harder and harder to place more stories on its pages these days. There are too many stories about browsers and office tools than real “OS News”. The quality of this site is as close to bad as you would want to get. This thread is a testament to editorial ramrodding.
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Damn, between not knowing the difference of NetBSD and OpenBSD and not knowing how to spell ‘Tom’, this is an editor worthy of Slashdot! How can this site advertise as being “OS”news?
Oh, and anytime you have to put a graphic to display that your database is down, you’re spending time on the wrong thing!
No big deal.
Once or twice a year, usual aroung the OpenBSD Hackathon (called Portathon by insiders) the OpenBSD hackers come up with great stuff on their own AND port a lot of NetBSD code to OpenBSD.
This is an example of NetBSD code being ported to OpenBSD.
I like OpenBSD and NetBSD.
It is good to exchange code.
There’s nothing wrong with sharing code. But I like to mention that in this case the work has not come from NetBSD.
It is original code, written by Mark Kettenis and Dale Rahn.

Thanks for fixing the mistake. For a while it seemed every time OpenBSD added a new arch someone would raise a stink because they got a lot of the code from NetBSD. While that might have been the case for some archs (amd64) it doesn’t appear to be the case here.
Keep up the good work Thom. I can’t remember my own name half the time.
For the record, topics I find acceptable on this site are:
a) OS’s (duh)
b) software that runs on OS’s
c) hardware that OS’s run on
d) political/financial issues that effect all of the above
e) anything the owners of the site want to post (with the typical exceptions of racial/religious slander, kiddie porn, you get the idea).
If you don’t like the site and think it sucks, why do you keep coming back and take the time out of your oh-so-busy schedules to complain about a typo? *rolls eyes*
</rant>
you’ve heared of it. – Yeah, it makes sense to port to a dead marginalized CPU, that is just being faded out. Especially since it won’t be ready for production… *yawn* Yes, everybody has a right to waste spare time as one sees fit, giving code-yourself-bla-bla-advice, etc..
