Ultron OS is an x86 Operating System written in C++. It is able to boot, initialise the GDT and IDT and do a couple of things that operating systems are supposed to do.
Exactly what is says on the tin: a high school project to write an operating system.
There isn’t much there there.. About a 20 files, (including headers), the longest of which was 306 lines long. It is essentially the barest bones of a single tasking executive with timers. I am not saying it isn’t impressive as a high school project, but it doesn’t actually seem interesting enough to be posted here
It also hasn’t been touched in three years
Where is the interesting-o-meter published? So we know what should be posted here?
Beyond that, this site is called “osnews”. OS as “operating systems”.
If you had a valid argument is that the article should say “what is happening with UltronOS? Three years and still no new commits there! Anyone know a sh1t?”
No idea. I presume it is individual, and thus I gave my opinion.
Tell you what, go and take a look at the source, and point out what you think is interesting about it. What it brings to the table that is new, or unique, or puts an interesting spin on things.
This project amounts to “area man writes minimal boot and startup code”. Again, I am not saying it isn’t impressive as a high school project, I just don’t see any there there. Now if it were being actively maintained, and he had a roadmap of where he wanted to go with it, then that might be a different story… which is why I mentioned that it had been idle for three years
Half (or more) of the entertainment comes from the comments. There is a line from Frank Herbert’s Jesus Incident – “The mystery of consciousness: Erroneous data yields significant results”. Likewise on OS News – silly posts can yield informative comments. Where would be the fun in all agreeing. I recommend throwing in the odd silly post as a matter of policy.
If that is the enjoyment you get, then that is the enjoyment you get. Tautologies aside, I would rather be having conversations about the interesting aspects about the things in the posts. Hell, I would have loved it if @CavemanGR had taken up my challenge and proved me wrong.
I am all for a silly post, that isn’t what this was to me. If it was to you, then it is too close to Herbert’s Bureau of Sabotage for my liking.
Well they kinda didn’t deliver under this news story.
