Due to adjusted work schedules at this time, we are pausing upcoming Chrome and Chrome OS releases. Our primary objectives are to ensure they continue to be stable, secure, and work reliably for anyone who depends on them. We’ll continue to prioritize any updates related to security, which will be included in Chrome 80.
Basically, Google wants to ensure the stability of Chrome and Chrome OS now that a lot of people are working from home due to the pandemic. Good call.
wow, that’s pretty cool actually
Thom Holwerda,
Funnily enough I read the same post differently. Google is pausing upcoming releases because of adjusted work schedules, however they will make an exception for security updates. The end result is the same of course, but the underlying reason for pulling updates may simply be due to internal staffing issues (employees are staying home) and not because they have a particular need to withhold updates from the public any more than usual.
Alfman,
It is probably a bit of both. I use Chrome extensively for my work at Google, and it is easy to see having it crash would hinder our work. We are lucky to be able to WFH, but frankly the reliability of the office schedule is not there.
Hope we get out of this soon and safe.
“Holy crap, did you get the latest report? They just discovered this HUGE bug that turns everyone’s screen yellow and redirects all to porn sites, we can’t release this!”
“I know, we’ll say that due to the COVID-19 pandemic we have to take a few more days to ensure… something”
“What has that got to do with anything?”
“Don’t worry about it, people see COVID-19 and their brains stop working. We could say we need to shave puppies and they’ll go ‘COVID-19, shaved puppies, right, sounds good’. It’s magic.”
“If you say so”
The amusing part is that they believe Chrome OS is stable at the moment.
If the stability of your updates are that big a concern that you want to stop them now, then you shouldn’t have been pushing them in the first place.
