A lot has changed since release 0.6.0! First thing, it is impossible to collect all the changes that happened since December 24, 2020 into one set of release notes, so this will focus on the highlights.
It was very important to me that this be a release targeting the foundations of Redox OS. This includes, the bootloader, the filesystem, the package manager, the kernel, the drivers, and much more. The focus was on enabling Redox OS to boot on the widest set of hardware possible.
Redox is a Rust-based operating system with a microkernel and a UNIX-like paradigm and an optional GUI. Its lead developer works for System76 as principal engineer.
It feels like Redox will be completed before Haiku…
Define complete.
Can it be used as a daily driver? Sure, with limitation.
But the same can be said on desktop Linux, which is being used to type this message (and run my business)…

Just for laughs, I am replying on Haiku ( WebPositive browser ). I am assuming your comment was just meant to be funny given how long Haiku has been in “beta”. Is there more to it?
It is completely crazy how long Haiku has been in “beta” but they are being fairly conservative on declaring R1. You could argue that they could have done so already and, depending on the hardware you have, there are apparently people out there that think Haiku is daily driver capable already.
I am impressed with the kinds of things that Redox is taking on. It feels less like it is going to beat anybody to production and more like it is going to be worth the wait. I am very interested to see what they do with Redoxfs now that it is copy-on-write. I would love to see Redoxfs get traction on Linux as well. Similarly, I would love to see Relibc used elsewhere. Broader usage can only make the code better for Redox as well.
The OS that may beat everybody to the finish line feels like Serenity. Those guys are cranking out some progress. With the high level of community engagement, it “feels” like it is going faster than it is. They really have not done much on the hardware support side yet though.
Redox may be ready before ReactOS though.
