There’s a new release of the venerable IceWM window manager, version 3.0.0. The major new feature here is tabbed windowing, in which you can drag titlebar over another to combine them into one unit. There are, of course, also the usual bug fixes and translation updates.
Ahh, nice to see a floating WM other than Fluxbox gaining tabbed windowing.
KWin had it for a while around the end of the 4.x series but lost it with the move to 5.x.
…and, of course, a perfect example of the kind of thing GNOME’s CSD ambitions preclude.
kwin losing tabbed windows (+rule based automation) is one of the only downsides when upgrading KDE 4.x to 5.x. I really miss this feature.
BeOS FTW!
It’s so lovely to see a WM of the late 90s still around and still being very useful. I chose it for my relatives’ desktops and within about 23 years I never had to explain them any changes! It’s still included in Debian and even the original theme works today.
Even when you run something else, it can be a good candidate for snappy remote desktops (x2go or VNC).
Kudos to the devs for the maintenance all over these years!
