This means the next time you sign in to your account, you’ll start seeing prompts to create and use passkeys, simplifying your future sign-ins. It also means you’ll see the “Skip password when possible” option toggled on in your Google Account settings.
To use passkeys, you just use a fingerprint, face scan or pin to unlock your device, and they are 40% faster than passwords — and rely on a type of cryptography that makes them more secure. But while they’re a big step forward, we know that new technologies take time to catch on — so passwords may be around for a little while. That’s why people will still be given the option to use a password to sign in and may opt-out of passkeys by turning off “Skip password when possible.”
I just don’t know how to feel about this universal, cross-corporate push from tech companies towards passkeys. I feel like when making the switch to passkeys, you’re giving something up. Something about it just doesn’t sit well with me, and for now, I’m going to be sticking to my trust password manager.
Binding your login-credentials to a device that is only secured by a 4 digit pin or by easily spoofed biometrics, that can be easily destroyed, lost or stolen sounds like a realy good idea. (not!)
Of course google loves it…
smashIt,
I agree, the security of biometrics are often oversold. They will get leaked/stolen knowingly or unknowingly, and when that happens…well too bad.

PKI has existed for so many decades and it’s really disappointing that the industry hasn’t adapted strong security measures. Static numbers and repeated passwords aren’t secure and I think it’s good to promote PKI. The industry needs more ubiquitous standards to enable consumers to manage their identities and PKI is an obvious choice. That said, I’m not so interested in the biometric aspects. Biometrics are static and I’m concerned about their use in applications like banking where biometrics could lead to increased physical danger.
I have the feeling that there will be a LOT of information locked out once passkeys get used. Lots of persons not aware of the account recovery problems when they loose a phone or something like that.
Lots of people will learn – the hard way.
And some people will lose their fingers if some darker intelligence agencies or criminal organizations need them.
