PipeWire 1.0 now has all the features that are expected to move media streams inside a system. It takes advantage of advanced features of the Linux kernel to provide low latency, low footprint, and high performance while being secure. It is the perfect tool to build an embedded system or to securely share streams between containers.
Linux audio and video has come a long way, and PipeWire is part of that. Excellent work.
Does this mean that the major distros now will start phasing out pulseaudio that has caused to much troubles over the years?
Which major distro uses PulseAudio at this point?
Looks like my openSUSE does.
> Since the 20220708 openSUSE Tumbleweed release, new installations use PipeWire as the default audio engine instead of PulseAudIo
For older installations you have to do some migration steps.
Hopefully they make it less annoying to run without a full desktop… like I want to use Pipeware with FVWM or IceWM or what have you, but its very annoying to setup and get working correctly because of all the bits and bobs you must have in place.
