Japan is preparing regulations that would require tech giants like Apple and Google to allow outside app stores and payments on their mobile operating systems, Nikkei has learned, in a bid to curb abuse of their dominant position in the Japanese market.
Legislation slated to be sent to the parliament in 2024 would restrict moves by platform operators to keep users in the operators’ own ecosystems and shut out rivals, focusing mainly on four areas: app stores and payments, search, browsers, and operating systems.

All around the world, the walls are closing in on these big tech monopolies. It’s a Christmas miracle.
Thom Holwerda,
…except for those of us residing in the US, haha.
They should be rewarded for innovation rather than market control. I would have much rather these companies promoted this philosophy on their own accord, but apparently it’s not very realistic. Regulation sucks, but hopefully the result is that these companies do throw in the towel on compulsory owner and market restrictions world wide.
I like it, but we should also keep asking ourselves: will they also go against Playstation Store?
Would be very interesting to have competing stores in videogames consoles also.
protomank,
I wouldn’t mind seeing this either, but probably not because nintendo/xbox/ps are less dominant in the console space than apple and google are in the mobile space.
IDK, it depends on whether the mood has changed amongst the elites with regards to vertical monopolies in general. There’s a geopolitical angle to this as well. All the targeted companies are American.
Inside America, there is concern over these things among the population who very much feel that these big companies have too much power (and that government has been captured by corporations – Trump literally runs on this, but the democrats can’t answer it effectively, because they are just as bought as Republicans are), but I’m curious how much that will translate in to any real government action.
Look as far as the difference between a recent jury decided (outsiders) anti-trust case, and one decided by a judge (insider) for everything you need to know about which way the wind is blowing in different tiers of American society.
Can’t compete, wait till the smart companies get big then force them to give everyone else a free ride. ♂
No one forced EU or Japanese people to use Android or iOS but oops Nokia, Blackberry and Microsoft flopped and it’s Google and Apples fault.
Apple and Google put in billions to build their ecosystems, setting up the infrastructure etc and then companies are like I don’t want to put in that effort so I will sue and hope to get free access to all that hard work and time.
Windows Sucks,
I don’t think you realize just how corrupt big businesses are. It was never a fair fight.

Even the Nokia CEO appointment was scandalous. It sucks, but you’re very unlikely to make it if you aren’t part of the corruption.
“you’re very unlikely to make it if you aren’t part of the corruption.”
So true, yet so depressing :-).
