The One Laptop Per Child project yesterday received its first shipment of the low-cost Linux laptops that are intended for children in emerging-economy nations, project member Chris Blizzard reports on his blog. And it runs Doom.

I wonder how long before they start showing up on eBay?
No way!
However, as it has been said many times, why not sell them at a good profit and put the money towards helping the children?
It’s like the old addage goes: Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime.
The money for these computers is chump change when you consider that textbooks distributed by the internet or CDROM are cheaper to maintain than hardcover paper pages. It will probably decrease publishing costs and improve digital literacy among children that would never see, let alone use, a new computer.
Yes I agree. I was merely suggesting selling some of those laptops at a premium to people willing to pay the price, and use the profits to build more laptops for the children.
Really, I just recently uncovered my Doom, Doom II, and Quake CDs, and finally got them playing on my Windows PC (Doomsday and Tenebrae, FYI). What good is any piece of hardware nowadays that can’t successfully run Doom? None, of course!
These poor kids who apparently need food and shelter more than a laptop (read the comments on every one of these threads–it will come up) can now competitively blow each other up with that wireless mesh network, or cooperatively kill monsters using it (awesome idea with the Aliens TC). This is far more inspiring than a skinned Abiword, ain’t it?
Once they Starcraft working on it, they will be more popular than the ivory tower intellectual elites designing it could ever have imagined.
For those of you fairly dense, yes, this has been intentionally candy-coated with sarcasm; but is still fairly serious, in so far as gaming will make the kids want to use it more, and that offers one reason of many to stick with x86 CPUs.
You are absolutely right when you say that these kids probably need food and water. When alot of people say that, it’s almost as if they are really saying “These kids needs US to give them food and water.”
Hey as long as the children have enough to survive until adulthood, these laptops will be the best things to ever happen to them.
Bringing more and more advanced technology and knowledge to the children will enable them to better themselves. I believe that we are at a critical time in world history as we adapt to all of the new technology that is increasing exponentially. Any effort to bring these children up to the level of first world education is a marvelous idea imho.
