The magnussoft ZETA 1.5 Pro is a major upgrade over the ZETA 1.21. It provides lots of new features and enhancements like SAMBA, multi-user, new device drivers etc. The product
can be pre-ordered for 29 Euros and it has an expected shipping date of 2007/01/15.
they would start working on their english:
“The magnussoft ZETA 1.5 Professional Upgrade is he next level of magnussoft ZETA…”
“Many of you wanted unrar to be able to handly password protected archives.”
i know they are a german company but this just throws an unprofessional light on them
I like this one:
“Warning pre-oder!”
thats probably there to keep the loons who were too lazy to read anything other than “order now” from complaining a week later because they havent gotten their copy yet
“i know they are a german company but this just throws an unprofessional light on them “
Achtung! There’s more!
http://www.zeta-os.com/cms/custom/produkte/upgrade.php claims to be (meta http-equiv=’content-type’ content=’text/html; charset=utf-8′ /), but in the text there are some umlauts (vocals with a .. on top) that are not correctly displayed because they are ISO-8859-1 and not UFT-8. Of course, the browser does not know that and treats these characters as UTF-8 values. That’s typical unprofessional. I am from Germany, so I have to know that.
Because we have a high rate of functional illeratism here in Germany, almost no one cares about things like standard conformity, accessibility (for disabled people), orthography, expression and interpunction, combined with “I don’t care, you can still read it.” Sadly, the ZETA page is no exception.
What is “illeratism”?
“What is “illeratism”?”
Typo. Of course it’s illiteratism, if someone is illiterate. Functional illiteratism means that someone can read the words, but is unable to recognize their meaning. It can be compared to the clinical image of dyslexia (ICD-10 F81.0/.1) according to the dysfunctions it causes, but it is not clinical by itself. It includes not only the reception of text, but also the production of text. Usually it’s a lack of education, of interest, sometimes of intelligency, but in most cases it’s a simple “I don’t care” situation as a result of a combination of the three things just mentioned. Corresponding german words: Funktionaler Analphabetismus, Illiteratismus, Dyslexie.
Sorry for typo.
Illiteracy.
“Illiteracy.”
Thank you. As you can see, english is not my native language and I tend to translate scientific terms nerly 1:1.
Exactly what it stands for, I suppoze.
All your Zeta are belong to us
Yeah, the upgrade can be oredered for 29 euros. The full retail product is _not_ availiable yet. When can I order Zeta 1.5?
<magnussoft pulls out their magic crystal ball that can read the future to answer the question>
Who cares how bad their translations are when you can’t even get the damned thing in the US? I thought YT was bad… These guys are the pits!
I think Haiku will reach me before Zeta’s owners develop the US market. It doesn’t matter how good your product is if you’re too stupid to bother marketing it.
…And another thing… The “upgrade” requirements for the 1.21 version were/are a slap in the face to everyone who supported Zeta. I don’t need 3 proofs to show I own my car… why should I be required to show 3 for a $#@%%*& piece of software?
“Who cares how bad their translations are […]”
Bed enlisch woh ceres? Seh waht I maen? It’s not their bad english that I have mentioned, it’s their bad german which I think is their native language.
“I think Haiku will reach me before Zeta’s owners develop the US market. It doesn’t matter how good your product is if you’re too stupid to bother marketing it.”
I’m sure they are able to ship Zeta to the US. Payment should work as well via Western Union or IBAN / SWIFT transaction codes. Or you find somebody in europe who buys it for you and does the shipping.
“…And another thing… The “upgrade” requirements for the 1.21 version were/are a slap in the face to everyone who supported Zeta.”
I assume it would be logical that if someone purchases the update, he already owns a previous version where he can use the update in order to get the newer version. You’re right, I think magnussoft went a bad way here.
Why is an “existing installation of magnussoft ZETA 1.21” required? How are you supposed to proof it? Furthermore, “billing receipt of magnussoft ZETA 1.21 is required to purchase this upgrade” implies that someone has already purchased the product, I think that should be enough. No one is forced to install the software he purchased, so there’s no need for the first requirement.
Please don’t get me wrong. I like Zeta and I hope it will get some more attention because it really has interesting features. It even came preinstalled on PCs offered in teleshopping, but this was long time ago, I think it was version 1.0…
…And another thing… The “upgrade” requirements for the 1.21 version were/are a slap in the face to everyone who supported Zeta.
I agree. I bought Zeta 1.1 (full copy), and Zeta 1.2 (upgrade). [Though an interesting point on the Zeta 1.2 upgrade is that you were authenticated to purchase an upgrade by YT. The CD distribution itself was actually a full install. Which meant that you could do a full Zeta 1.2 install without needing your Zeta 1.1 CD at all. Very cool. Basically YT authorized previous Zeta owners to simply pay less for the full copy of Zeta 1.2.]
When I contacted Magnussoft about a Zeta 1.21 upgrade, they said I had to send my previous disc back to them. Besides being totally unuser-friendly, that is an unacceptable upgrade procedure for someone like me who is an operating system hobbyist/collector/enthusiast/whatever. I want to keep all my physical purchases for my OS collection.
Well, I think Zeta is good for Haiku. I have no intention of getting Zeta either but I appreciate that they have been keeping BeOS out in the open so that when Haiku is finally released, there will be a first base of users that will want to switch over. Hopefully, magnussoft will recognize they will be left behind in the long run if they don’t cooperate with Haiku but the short term does matter. Haiku could really use that kind of distribution once it’s released even if magnussoft isn’t exactly optimal.
we can discuss poor english (and definitelly they need to correct that), but… the changelog is impressive…

in summary: added romania translation
I do not see anything impressive in changelog. There is ZERO mentions about ATI Radeon driver or any fixes to existing driver. So far none of the Zeta versions have worked with my X800 unless I used vesa. And if I am supposed to pay for it I expect hardware accelerated 2D-graphics as minimum, vesa is not enough.
Also I did not notice any mentions about fixing Audigy driver which has been borked in every Zeta version (including 1.21, I send bug reports for that driver for at least 2 Zeta versions and it did not get fixed). Yes, bebits has or at least had working version, but why it was not used in Zeta distribution?
Zeta lives or dies with its drivers. Other changes are useless if it lacks drivers needed to run it in my or anyone elses system.

I really like Zeta and BeOS, but in my opinion it’s too expensive!
99 Euros – Zeta 1.21
29 Euros – Zeta 1.5 Upgrade
————————
128 Euros for an OS that can do exactly the same like ubuntu.
Plus I don’t understand why they don’t make a low cost download version for the US market or something. I am sure they can get low cost mirrors. Or do like some companies. Charge a fee for the OS and in the cost add on the download cost of using paid mirrors (Premium Mirrors) which are like $.75 per download or something.
Definetly cheaper than Windows I can look through them
everyday, and for free, including Vista view
> 128 Euros for an OS that can do exactly the same like ubuntu.
Can Ubuntu play mp3 files out of the box? No.
Can Zeta play mp3 files out of the box? Yes.
Also, the desktop is different, you can’t get it like that in Ubuntu without a LOT of customization, I don’t know if it’s even possible.
And it doesn’t use X11, which is actually quite visible. Zeta does update the screen faster.
Can Ubuntu play mp3 files out of the box? No.
Can Zeta play mp3 files out of the box? Yes.
Can I get Ubuntu for free and have it installed and playing DVD’s and MP3’s faster then I can get Zeta after paying for it? Heck Yea
Can I get the new Zeta, download it, install it and play MP3’s? Heck no.
All that and for free. Actually I can get Windows XP legal for less then Zeta.
Remember you can’t play MP3’s out the box on Ubuntu for one because Ubuntu does not come in a “box” and because it’s free they can’t include it (Legally) LOL!
> Can Ubuntu play mp3 files out of the box? No.
> Can Zeta play mp3 files out of the box? Yes.
Don’t go there, as it’s a lost battle. There are too many things that Ubuntu can do and Zeta can’t, like printing from Firefox, Flash, Java, ACPI and MS Word/Excel compatibility, just to name a few. Plus Ubuntu is free.
Seems like they keep coming out with updates constantly that’ll cost you. Most of them are fixes to things or slight improvements. Maybe instead of charging 30 euros every 3 months for a “new” version, they shourd do a yearly subscription. Or actually release updates instead of charging for point increases. At least Windows waits until the next version and Apple waits once a year.
I’ve had ZETA for ages, but have stopped purchasing upgrades for exactly this reason. Paying a company for partial functionality increases this much is crazy.
…albeit not a very good reason. Red tape.
Magnussoft is a different firm to yT, and they are legally unable to access yT’s customer database. So they can’t prove who bought zeta and who didn’t. They need some way of verifying that you actually paid for it, and the CD is the only way that will work for all customers and not have mad overheads. It’d be quite easy to forge an invoice from one of the now-gone regional resellers for RC1, for instance.
I did not see either an NDIS or ATI graphics update in the list.
I have 1.20/1.21 on a thinkpad T41p and the only two areas I had problems with were graphics and wireless. I eventually got the graphics using something from bebits, but not wireless. I was hoping an NDIS update might give support for my atheros wireless.
Oh well maybe next release.
Purplus has been selling ZETA for a long time, first for yellowTAB and now for magnussoft:
http://store.purplus.net/beos.html
and that together with other BeOS and ZETA-related products.
<l>Magnussoft is a different firm to yT, and they are legally unable to access yT’s customer database.</l>
Lame excuse #887 !!!! Bernd Korz is still involved. B.K. was yT. Therefore, Magnussoft could access the database just by getting B.K.’s permission. If B.K. was no longer involved with Zeta I could understand such a statement.
Also, another point. If Magnussoft gave a damned about Zeta customers, they would have setup a validation server to allow people who bought Zeta 1.0 and 1.1 to actually be able to USE the product they bought.
Erm, no, no he couldn’t. I’d advise you to look up European privacy and data protection laws.
yT, as a firm, are gone. Their customer database is legally gone with it. You clearly don’t even understand the relationship between Bernd Korz and Magnussoft, but thats beside the point – nobody is allowed access that database for legal reasons. Would be different if the companies were in the US, but they aren’t
As goes the activation server, Zeta 1.0 and 1.1 weren’t their products. The activation code checks against a domain name they don’t own. They probably don’t legally own the software required to activate it. Additionally, the activation didn’t work for crap, you generally had to phone up yT in Germany. They don’t own the phone number in the activation tool and they have no obligation to pay for the staffing time it would take to have someone answer the phone – it might be one call a day, a week, whatever, but its still taking up time they’re paying for to support a product that wasn’t theirs.
yT are gone, a lot of people got bitten, some very badly (the staff, for one). Live with it. If you’ve any interest in the product, be glad that its still available and that the new retailers are actually giving discounts to products that weren’t bought off them.
I’m glad I didn’t buy Zeta OS a year or so ago (just to look at it). Too many hoops, sounds like exceptionally poor customer service/after sales service. I think I’ll pass…

That’s the saddest thing about ZETA so far. You can buy the Version 1.0 from Purplus for $40, but there’s no support at all.
And I don’t like the idea of paying for Update versions, especially if the “updates” are mostly bug fixes and hardware drivers. Why should I have to pay them to fix their own mistakes?!?
Another probem, the hardware list from yT is no longer accessible, and Mangussoft doesn’t appear to have one. The yT list was hopelessly out of date anyway.
-Bob
…and don’t forget…
Incorporated fixes from Haiku for various applications.
