Linux.com has a review of the Fedora Core 6 live CD: “The current live CD is very usable. Its package selection makes it an ideal starting point for a new Linux user. It doesn’t have OpenOffice.org and uses the freed up space intelligently to include SCIM and translations that’ll allow it to reach more users.”
I wonder how the “build your own” featue will be used. Distributions like Blag and Berry seem like great targets for this feature. Also, I wonder if individuals could use this feature to download their perfection version of FC instead of the DVD or five CD’s.

The Free Software Foundation will rejoice! (Blag being on their list.)

I’d still miss the option of installing to hard drive, though.
But there is good news: the next Fedora will ‘ship’ as “Fedora Gnome” (a.k.a. Fedora Desktop but that makes no sense since KDE is also a desktop), “Fedora KDE”, and “Fedora Server”. So the amount of CD-burned MBs needed for your favorite installation will be drastically reduced.

That option is currently on alpha stage. Feel free to test it and report bugs.

Of course. There are number of changes being made for users to customize the distribution or even role out their own very easily. A short list:
* Moving Fedora installer Anaconda to a yum base in Fedora Core 5
* Ability to add any packages from Fedora Extras, custom or third party repository during installation time itself in Fedora Core 6
* The merge of core and extras with two different desktop and one server spins in Fedora 7. http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/7
* Creation of Pungi as Free and open source software which is a distribution building tool that Fedora 7
will use.
https://hosted.fedoraproject.org/projects/pungi
* Guidelines for derivatives – http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/FeatureFedoraTargettedSpins
* Finally, Pligrim, the live creation tool which makes it trivial to roll out your own. Installation to hard disk feature is already in the latest alpha and that will make the process of creating derviatives as simple as pointing out a Yum repository and listing the packages you want in your own derivative.

It will be interesting to see if Ubuntu will provide some tools to customize their distro and livecd.
Does anybody know of simple way to make Debian based livecds from scratch (iso small as possible)?
regarding ubuntu , have you tried reconstructor? [ http://reconstructor.aperantis.com/ ]
it makes the process of customizing the live cd super easy , in fact it is just a matter of point-n-click.
and voila ! you just made a custom live cd with custom artwork/packages/name
