My favorite distro I cannot wait for the final release of 7…
Well, nice wallpaper, nice icons, pretty fine:

I’ll go ahead and post all these comments:
1. Fedora Sux
2. Fedora Rules
3. Ubuntu has been very good to me.
4. The icons suck
5. The icons rule.
6. It’s not as good as Vista.
7. Vista sucks.
8. Why is the pre-lease of Fedora news?
9. If only they would use a BSD license.
OK, I’ve spent too much time at OSAlert lately!
lol
that was great.

Haha, me too. But lets not get too slashdotely self-critical about it now. Repeatedly reloading the front page is meditative.
“9. If only they would use a BSD license. ”
10. Mandatory BSD-GPL-Proprietary License flamewar
Is it just me, or do you also feel Fedora’s look and feel is more and more ugly?
http://www.phoronix.net/image.php?id=653&image=fedora_7t2_08_lrg
Fedora Core 4 used to be nicer: http://linux.softpedia.com/screenshots//Fedora-Core_3.jpg
When it’s nice, don’t change it, or you risk to have something of lower quality.
That second link is a shot of Fedora Core 5, not 4.
Besides, wallpaper and icon screenshots are about the least relevant thing ever to an OS test release. How about a ban?

While this is true for a server, it’s not true for a desktop.

I don’t know many people using Linux that don’t change their desktop background(s) and icon sets to something different from the default. If they don’t, they either like it or wouldn’t care whatever desktop look you throw at them.
If they don’t like it, and wouldn’t know how to change what they see, they’re not likely to use Linux anyway.
Either way, I see mostly irrelevance here.
Screenshots are useful and interesting for new GUI tools, remarkable DEs, and fresh window wobbliness, but they’re a waste of bandwidth when it comes to a bunch of silly icons and wallpapers.

Is this a reason not to do a good job offering a decent look & feel for the default desktop? Windows and OS X do, why not Fedora?

There we go. What makes you think taste is universal? Personally, I think Fedora’s default look is decent, a bit dull like any desktop should be. If some people like it too much, inevitably others will hate it.
Fedora ArtTeam is planning to bring wallpapers from previous version of Fedora so users who like them can switch to your favorite.
Beauty lies in the eyes of beholder, something that is beautiful to me might be ugly for someone else. One man’s food is some one else’s poison, it just a matter of preference, personal choice. Fedora seems to be evolving into mature operating system.
Legoland? Am I missing something? How does it look like Lego? Aside from the screenshot looking very nice, imho, there is NOTHING there that even remotely resembles Lego.
Distros would stick with the GNOME icon set, the newer additional icons look great and are SVG. Why waste time creating a new icon set when the GNOME devs have done one already!
I wish there were only one OS. Why bother creating new OSes when there are already?
>> Why bother creating new OSes when there are already?
It is simple. One size doesn’t fit all
It is called branding. If you really look at it, 85-90% of the software Ubuntu and Fedora are running are the same. Sure, they both might apply distro specific patches or bugfixes cherrypicked from the latest cvs, but it is all the same.
“User experience” is what sets different distros apart and branding happens to be one of the biggest parts of that.
RedHat lost my respect with infamous RedHat Linux 7.0 release. This is lamest, ugliest, bloatware evar known to mankind. How many cd-s got simplest install?
NO COOKIE FROM ME!
I don’t understand. Didn’t Fedora 5 have a really sweet “bubbly” theme on all the widgets and gtk stuff? Why did they go back to Clearlooks? Clearlooks isn’t bad, don’t get me wrong I don’t mind Clearlooks, but every distro has that theme, Clearlooks doesn’t set it apart from other distros like the FC5 theme did. What happened to it?
The theme is called Clearlook 2. It is available on both art.gnome.org and gnome-look.org. Fedora has gtk-engine-murrine that achieves similar effect so it is likely a new theme will be based on it.
Well, I have been recently looking for performance issues that plauge linux in general and how to overcome them and I have found that the #1 fact affecting this is the basic drivers that got installed with each distro that will kill your system performance.
1. X uses alot of CPU (60% on GF4600Ti with latest nvidia drivers)when just scrolling opera or firefox!
2. syslogd and klogd uses upto 76% with simple network transfer of 350MB files
3. “hdparm -i /dev/hda” resulted in 1900MB/s cached and 70 MB/s buffered on WD Raptor SATA Disk with 10,000rpm rotational speed
4. java 1.6 jdk when used by azureus 2.5 will use 170% CPU Time seen by “top” tool
5. > 4 heavy multitaking is almost impossible, but not just this, It will frees “gdm”, and you cannot troubleshoot then because of bad kerenl scheduling of processes (bad inturrupts handling/prioritizing/switching)
All this will disappear with me when I use opensolaris 11.55b on the same hardware.
I wish fedora could fix these issues soon, because my taste started to shift to Unixy, and I might buy next a solaris based workstation for my heavy needs.
Till now I have 3 workstations (2 RHEL 4.4, 1 FC 6).
Tools used:
1. top
2. hdparm
3. ps aux
4. cat /proc/<file>
5. cat /var/log/<different log files>
6. lspci -v
7. others
1. i agree, there’s something very wrong with nvidia’s “accelerated” drivers, at least on the gf4 series. are you using the legacy version (pre-9631 i think). the open intel gm945 drivers seem to far exceed nvidia’s 420go drivers on my laptops. maybe it’s the old 2d sux on nvidia issue….
2. this really depends on your hardware – some nics are like winmodems and offload a lot to the cpu. funnily enough my realtek 8169 gige cards are supposed to be crap, but in fact they outperform my intel pro 1000ct cards on cpu usage and top speed. i’ve never seen more than about 10% cpu shifting gigs over the lan. i don’t think its a driver issue.
3. not sure what you’re trying to say there. my wd-satas (not raptors, but 16mb/7200rpm/sata300) get 60MB/s, but i think that cached reading of yours is wrong.
4. well that’s java for you, blame sun for that! but seriously, i’ve never seen it that bad, however it usually is the highest cpu hog on my machine, same goes for java 1.5
5. i don’t get your point there. is this relating to 4? i’ve never seen performance of anything get that bad. do you have enough ram or a multi-core/ht cpu?
i’ve been into solaris for years, i’ve used it as a desktop, but that pretty much sucks, i’m about to put a netra in a datacentre though, sun kit rocks as servers.
as far as screenshots go, yeah they are pretty pointless if only to show off eye candy and not new apps.
i do get fed up of osnews articles not actually mentionning new FEATURES of new releases, just the new theme….
“2. syslogd and klogd uses upto 76% with simple network transfer of 350MB files ”
You’re not supposed to log every packet with contents to syslog.
But seriously, syslogd and klogd? For network transfers?
Maybe you’re doing something seriously wrong for this to happen?
If this was a common case wouldn’t it be more widely known by now?
3. “hdparm -i /dev/hda” resulted in 1900MB/s cached and 70 MB/s buffered on WD Raptor SATA Disk with 10,000rpm rotational speed
That’s funny. On my PC that command results in information about my hard drive. This is unsurprising since that is what hdparm -i does.
Also, the average transfer rate of a Raptor is about 70MB/s so I can only assume that your displeasure with the results is due to severe mental retardation. This is confirmed by your other points.
I might buy next a solaris based workstation for my heavy needs.
That would be a great idea! If there is one thing the OpenSolaris community needs it’s another idiot with bad English and poor trolling skills.
What I just can’t understand is how you convinced yourself that anyone would care whether you used Linux or not? I can’t really see your defection making CNN somehow.
they can’t seem to make up their minds about what spins are going to be released…last time around they had a desktop one, this time they have an all purpose one, what’s next?
that said, dropping the desktop spin as seperate from the liveCD was a good idea – they should market the liveCD as the gnome desktop spin, because that’s exactly what it is
Thank from me for this good Distro… It’s installed in an VM for Testing and it looks still great.
– Fedora User since the first Tests –
I get a kernel panic when I try to boot after install. I read on Fedora Forums that others are having the same problem. Disappointing, it looks decent.
Known issue listed on http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/F7Test2/ReleaseNotes
under mkinitrd section. Remember this is a test release to track most bugs as possible.
