“This report covers FreeBSD related projects between January and March 2007. This quarter ended with a big bang as a port of Sun’s critically acclaimed ZFS was added to the tree and thus will be available in the upcoming FreeBSD 7.0 release. Earlier this year exciting benchmark results showed the fruits of our SMP work. Read more on the details in the ‘SMP Scalability’ report.”
I’m not a FreeBSD user, but I’m really willing to try 7.0 when it comes out. It’s looking really good.
In one week they will integrate xorg 7.2 and GCC 4.1, they integrated ZFS,…
If with the 6.x branch they started to recover from all the problems introduced in the 5.x series, it looks like FreeBSD 7 will shine and fly really high.
With the competition of Linux, FreeBSD and Solaris, looks like the desktop market will get really interesting for Unix in the next few years. It reminds me of what happened with the diesel engines in the last decade (in Europe, at least): until 10 years ago they were considered heavy and old, and only suitable for trucks or taxis. Suddenly a bit of love was put into them, and everyone found out they were in fact better (more stable, more efficient) than gasoline engines. And from ~5% market share they grew to over 60% very fast.
Now the long awaited “year of desktop Linux” will become the “year of desktop Unix”, and that’s when Microsoft will really have to start worrying.
I think it’ll be 1 month before xorg 7.2 is really integrated, seeing as how they’ll freeze the ports for two weeks or so to integrate 7.2 with other ports.
But I’m looking forward to the new xorg and GCC myself, mainly because I hope the new xorg will boost the whole graphic experience on *nix, and GCC boost the overall performance.
I might just buy a new harddisk for my laptop and install -current so I can already play around with it without waiting for a stable beta release like I always did before.
In one week they will integrate xorg 7.2
Too bad it still doesn’t support AIGLX properly on Intel and ATI hardware on FreeBSD.

This is true, but give it time. It shouldn’t be too long.
It may be longer than you think as there is no one looking at getting AIGLX working.

I definitely agree. So long as significant projects are able to retain enough talented developers to move forward, I see the competition as a positive thing.
I jumped on board at FBSD 5.4, and it has just kept getting better.
Thanks to all the ppl who made this happen. I think FreeBSD 7 is going to be a very lovely release. SMPng is almost there watch out if you have multi cores.
I read in soo many threads here that FreeBSD is deadmeat. Guess someone is wrong.
Just a wet dream from the linux people.
