“AmigaOS 5 made a covert appearance at an event outside the CES, turning up in the guise of a version of Space Invaders running on a Windows Mobile 6-based phone. Amiga – the company – was ostensibly showing AmigaAnywhere 2, the new version of its virtual machine technology. But taking Amiga President Bill McEwen aside for a moment, we discovered that AmigaAnywhere 2 is AmigaOS 5.”
Amiga nowhere. Bill is clueless and has no idea what his customers want.
Port OS4 to generic PPC hardware so that all of us with old Macs can enjoy it. Simple.
“Port OS4 to generic PPC hardware so that all of us with old Macs can enjoy it. Simple.”
awesome.
If he won’t port it, let the community do the job.

fixed
Port OS4 to generic PPC hardware so that all of us with old Macs can enjoy it. Simple.
I still don’t understand why they won’t do this. Can you even buy an AmigaOne anymore? Is there any hardware, that I can currently buy, that will run Amiga OS4?
Ok, so you tied your OS to the AmigaOne to protect Eyetech, right? How has this helped Amiga? How did the deal with Eyetech help Amiga? Why not port this to semi-standard hardware (how many PPC macs are in the wild?) and prevent your company from being screwed over by your hardware partner? (Not that Amiga was “screwed over” by Eyetech, a case could be made that it was the other way around, too.)
But, by porting to existing hardware that is cheap and commonly available, you might actually be able to SELL it to people. Now, the potential sales base for OS4 is 0, since you can’t buy hardware to run it on, even if you want to. (And most people don’t.)
There is, but AInc won’t let them do the minimal work to do so. PPC Mac isn’t made anymore, but Genesi and soon ACube make a series of motherboards which would be able to run it. EFiKA (and soon SAM) might not be massive powerhouses, but they’re better than nothing.
i bet its just space invaders for windows mobile and nothing else. There is no vm its just a fancy splash screen for space invaders!
Someone should just do the humane thing an euthanize the Amiga IP for good. The platform has been in zombie mode for far too long.
Just release the damn code for the OS, so that some people can keep their platform of choice. The business model of what passes for the holder of the Amiga IP is not even in the same neighborhood of what AmigaOS does. So why do they hold to something, other than to add insult to injury?
Amiga Anywhere used to be a based on Tao’s intent. I bet it still is. There is no way Bill McEwen has the resources to port all of that work to AmigaOS.
Can’t be, Amiga lost their license when Tao went under. McEwan a few months ago was going on and on about having 50 .NET developers, so my guess is that this is .NET!
I’m not usually an advocate of decrying a company for not open sourcing their software but I think in this case its the only way the Amiga OS will survive.
Open Source it Bill and let people with real passion who have a clue take it to all the places you seem incapable of taking it.
Bit_Rapist : Bill cannot open sources because it does not have them. Hyperion wrote AmigaOS 4.
Just seeing Amiga and MS in same sentence makes me sad, but seeing them cooperating in making advance ultra-mega “space invaders” makes me wonder about my sanity? Are they kidding or have i ate something fishy ?? Someone really needs to get in touch with reality!!… And it ain’t me!… If someone would tell me that Microsoft is using AmigaOS as a “platform” to run “Space invaders” 15 years ago, i would punch him in the face.. Sad to see my beloved platform come tothis level, at least let it go with some dignity Bill, Open Source it!!!
en tee
…they liked the idea but neglected the purpose. I suggested it as a stopgap solution for while most people were on AmigaOS 3.5/3.9 until AmigaOS 4.0 reached maturity so that people could write software that would work on both. IMHO, now that AmigaOS 4 is out, AmigaAnywhere has no further purpose for existence.
There are other VMs for handhelds, other APIs for cross-platform portability, and, most importantly, some of those portable APIs work on VMs for handhelds.
If you want portable code, forget AmigaAnywhere 2 and use SDL, OpenGL, and LLVM. That’s what I’m going to do.

As an Amiga fan It just makes me cringe that this news made it outside of the Amiga faithful. This is truly an injustice. Will the people that are holding this technology please just give it to the people and stop dragging this dead horse that your calling the “new Amiga” through the mud and just give up!
At this point I would pay you guys to just to shut up!!
Unless the author of this article has some information that’s never been revealed before, this statement makes no sense:
“The point for AmigaOS buffs is that AmigaAnywhere 2 effectively starts up a virtual machine, boots AmigaOS and runs the code on top of that. And that makes it perfectly possible for Amiga lovers to fire it up and run the familiar Amiga GUI instead of the game.”
AmigaOS5/AmigaAnywhere is NOT the same thing as “the familiar AmigaOS”, which means it also cannot include “the familiar Amiga GUI.”
Or has someone seen a demo of the (vaporware) OS5 that I’m not aware of??
As for AmigaAnywhere, all I can say is–Java: been there, done that. This was of course true from the beginning on; it seems the AmigaAnywhere strategy has always just been a ploy for SOME source of income for Amiga, Inc. while being able to lead “Amiga enthusiasts” on that something real was being developed.
This is like Zeta all over again. All this speculation, questions about who owns the source code, yada yada yada. What’s the point? How are these people making money?
