Eyetech Group Ltd has announced that both SE and XE model AmigaOne boards are now on sale. AmigaOS4 will be demonstrated tomorrow at the World of Amiga Southeast 2002 in the UK, the OS will soon be released as well, but when people order an AmigaOne with LinuxPPC now, they will receive the OS for free.
this stuff is just too expensive! 600 Euro for just a board and a CPU.
I will keep my faster PC and use Amithlon or Aros!
But it is good to have a source for computers outside the US! ( DMCA )
If you live in the UK and you would like to see this AmigaOS4 demonstration for yourself or you would like to hear the lastest from Amiga Inc, Hyperion or maybe you solely want to see final consumer AmigaOne boards in action. Then look here for show information:

Can you even buy an AGP 2X graphics card anymore? And why would you?
Wasn’t Amiga known for it’s graphics superiority?
vb
And the GUI is just ugly. What’s with the puke colors and obnoxious background texture graphic?
vb
Why do they keep the ultra old legacy ports? PS/2, Serial, Parallel ports and that useless floppy drive have got to GO! NOW!!!
I only have one legacy peripheral(BJC-4400) left in my house and it’s not even hooked to any of my PCs anymore. It’s on my SMC router/print server.
@ kragil

Exact details will be revealed tomorrow. Note that the systems are first and foremost targeted at AmigaOS fans and Amiga developers.
Of course development costs need to be covered. Much later when AmigaOS4 software is in abundance and AmigaOnes are flying of the counter, prices can come down.
@ Vic Berkshire
The main advantage of new Amiga systems will be that AmigaOS should be alot faster and more efficient compared to current mainstream OSes. Of course AmigaOS graphics advantages like multiple screen support will remain.
New screenshots of AmigaOS4 will be released soon. Though note that you can customize AmigaOS’s appearance to suit your personal taste.
Lighten up. This OS was just rezzed from the ashes. Give it some time. I am with you though, NO LEGACY CRAP!!

Because they are still useful to many people. There are even alot of Amiga users who will buy the new Catweasel MK3 PCI/Flipper board, which will allow us to read original Amiga diskettes and connect legacy Amiga keyboards, joysticks, etc.

I don’t think I ever saw a heatsink/fan on the G3 CPU in any of the photos. Pretty “cool” wouldn’t you say? pun intended.
A heatsink isn’t even needed for the G3 CPU.
Pegasos and AmigaOne systems operate extremely quitely, just like classic Amigas. Your system doesn’t need to sound like a vacuum cleaner, unlike many PCs on the market today.
I think in a couple of years, people will look back at our current machines with amazement, laughing at all those noisy fans pointing in nearly every direction, “super” computers taking minutes to boot and computing monopolies fighting against efforts for universally supported standards or platform independent advancements.

In a few years/decades we will be computers
I know those were just trolls, but:
– Radeon9700Pro works on AGP 2x and so does Parhelia512
– AmigaOS4 GUI is customizable, so you can make it look like what ever you want.
Examples of OS3.9:
http://www.gfxbase.com/wbshots/wbshots.shtml
http://www.trotta.de/club/wb-txt/index.php
http://www.amigafuture.de/interactive/workbench.php
Most of those GUI tools are built in the OS4.
Are very usefull debugging aids and very usefull to hardware developers. Fact is they take almost no board space and add no cost to the machine. Why complain about them?
Next to all those interesting Next Generation Amiga stuff, several other interesting products will be sold and demonstrated at the show.
3 new commercial games will be launched at the show for classic Amigas: Quake II, Software Tycoon and Tales of Tamar.
Also, Thendic/bPlan will be demonstrating their current Pegasos/MorphOS PPC betatester systems. http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=1897
What about us lonely(and disgruntled) pc users on the other side of the pond? Are there any US partners, and if so, when might they start offering system boards and for how much?

Mike: you didn’t read my post properly.
@ optik-white
Yes, the first US AmigaOne dealers known to me are:
Compuquick http://www.compuquick-amigadirect.com/
Extreme Corporation http://www.extreme-computing.com/
Mr Hardware Computers http://www.mrhardwarecomputers.com/
ForeFront technologies http://www.forefronttechnologiesinc.com/
@ Ronald
I think I gave you an appropriate answer: Because there is a demand for legacy hardware support. Surely iMac type models will be an attractive option for the future, but Apple currently targets a very different group of computer users.
that isn’t bad… not bad at all… I have never seen an amiga nor it’s OS but I may buy one in the near future.
think ill get myself one for x-mas :o)
(wonder how expensive getting it imported would be?)
Woohoo! Only a few more weeks untill the release of Amiga OS4.
Kermit, tomorrow more details will be given to the public with regard to the development status of AmigaOS4, please wait for the first show reports or attend the show. If Hyperion would finish the AmigaOne version of AmigaOS4 by the date you mention, they will likely release the OS together with a version for PPC enabled classic Amigas at the big German Amiga in Aachen. (7th and 8th of December)
http://messe.think42.com/
However many unforseen things could happen during software development and testing, therefor it would be possible that we would see a Cyberstorm/Blizzard slightly prior to the AmigaOne version.
It whould be interesting if somone chould hack Mac OS X to run on one of these things. Of course you can just use Mac on Linux, but thats not quite the same.
I notice they have only one slot of 66Mhz PCI slot…. A lot of stuff is coming out for that….
But in essence, this machines are quite expensive. Especially since it is just a motherboard plus a CPU. I understand deevlopment money needs to be paid off, but laying them all on “early birds” isn’t a wise solution.
Think these boards will get a huge sale if someone makes it possible to run MacOS X on these babies. I would certainly buy one. Although I do own a Mac, building a clone sure sounds fun. And since these things fit in a normal ATX-case.
As soon as this is possible I will have one. In the mean time just watch how it all develops.

I don’t remember seeing PS/2 ports on any of the amigas I owned… Why do they need them now?
The AmigaOne boards already run LinuxPPC with MacOnLinux. It was demonstrated a few months ago by a betatester where he was able to run Mac OS9 just fine. And guess what the MOL people just announced? That’s right… Mac OS 10.2 runs on MOL. So it should be only a couple of steps to get Mac OSX on your AmigaOne.
One problem: When (not if that happens, Apple will probably start sueing people, because it’s illegal to run Mac OSX on other than Mac hardware. :-
I don’t care about Amiga, but the G4/800 board would make a great Linux workstation! When will the US dealers be getting these boards in?
@ rajan r
The decision to make these finalized motherboards available to users, is based on feedback from the users. Many people have requested this, so that users can already port other OSes and Software to the platform before AmigaOS4 is actually released.
@ Ronald
> I don’t remember seeing PS/2 ports on any of the amigas
> I owned… Why do they need them now?
That’s probably because you haven’t owned an Amiga in quite some time now. After years of corporate Amiga leadership vacuums, broken keyboards often were often replaced by cheaper more widely available mainstream PS/2 keyboards and mouses.
For those who believe serial ports are useless…
Has anyone tried to configure a cisco router/switch?
^_^
@ dealing_death
More information with regard to AmigaOne availability is expected to be revealed by Eyetech later today at the WOASE show.
Presentation/Announcements Timings:

16:00 GMT Eyetech – Presentation/Announcement
16:30 Amiga Inc announcements.
16:45-17:15 GMT Q&A Session. Panelists Confirmed so far, Fleecy Moss (CTO Amiga Inc), Ben Hermans (CEO Hyperion).
@Katsumi
There are also some DSL modems which are serial only (like
the one I use – Ericson HIS).
I might just start thinking about one of this boards. They aren’t that expensive, in my opinion.
I see that Amiga OS4 isn’t available but Linux and NetBSD might just run out of the box on this boards.
Just two questions (if not too late on this tread):
-Is there a port of Mozilla for Amiga OS4 (or other decent browser like Opera) ?
-Can you make it run Mac OS9 for sure ?
> Is there a port of Mozilla for Amiga OS4 (or other
> decent browser like Opera)?
A new version of IBrowse should be available for AmigaOS4 at release, this is IMO the best of the three main classic Amiga browsers currently.
Although there are plans to port Mozilla to AmigaOS4, IMO a dedicated, professionally organised and skilled development team would be needed to make this reality. Porting the Gecko rendering engine for use with future Amiga browsers would be a good option though.
Of course you can use Mozilla through Linux on the AmigaOne for the time being.
> Can you make it run Mac OS9 for sure?
Through usage of Mac-On-Linux for sure, the same goes for MacOS X.
Question 1:
No, not yet. There was a mozilla port going at some point, but apparently it was dropped again. AmigaOS4 will ship with IBrowse, which is a fair browser, considering it doesn’t support CSS yet. The biggest disadvantage I would say right now is the lack of really good browsers, as only AWeb, IBrowse and Voyager (similarly named, but not the same as the one in QNX).
Port one of the existing ones from Linux or Windows and the problem is solved.
Question 2:
About Mac OS9, read this link:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/amigaone/message/17938
Funny you should mention Gecko, Mike. Because, I’ve discussed this issue with my fellow programmers on the AWeb APL team, and we’ve figured, while it may be a daunting task, it could probably be done. There is a problem with it being C++ though and AmigaOS API’s are only in C.
Still, we would want to get a better HTML-engine in AWeb as soon as possible, and try to avoid as much bloat as possible (AWeb’s philosophy) by programming a new engine from the bottom up, using Gecko as a function reference instead of using Gecko itself.
This engine could eventually be generalised and used by other applications.
Mike, it was a joke. Hint: Check your calendar
“When (not if that happens, Apple will probably start sueing people, because it’s illegal to run Mac OSX on other than Mac hardware.”
Do you have a link to back up this statement? Thanks.

@ optik-white
Apparently there’s another AmigaOne dealer in the US I did not yet know about.
Computer Connection http://www.compamiga.com/
@ Kermit
I thought that was kind of a strange date, but initially I always try to take everyone seriously.
Officially, the MacOS end-user license agreement does not allow you to use MacOS on non Apple branded hardware. So it is unlikely that we would soon see 3rd party solutions running any kind of MacOS pre-installed.
This is where I got it from:
http://www.maconlinux.org/faq.html
Q: Does MOL run on non-Apple hardware?
A: It does. MOL runs for instance on the Pegasos board, the Teron board and on AmigaOne hardware. In short, MOL should run on any PowerPC hardware (with the except of 601-based systems). However, the EULA of MacOS prohibits its usage on non-Apple hardware (it is of course perfectly legal to use MOL to boot a second Linux though).
I’m not sure about the thing with older MacOS’es, since Apple haven’t bothered to react against the many 68k Mac emulators, probably because they are useless with newer software, so the emulators pose no real threat to their latest products.
There is iFusion though for classic PPC equipped Amigas, which lets you run the latest Photoshop and MacOS9. (Note it doesn’t work very well.) I haven’t heard anything about legal actions.
I don’t know. It’ll be exciting to see where this is going. It could boost sales of MacOSX, but the hardware sales could remain the same for them, so there probably wouldn’t be any real loss.
@ montanus
It appears that bPlan/Thendic were demonstrating Pegasos systems running MacOSes at the WOASE show. I doubt they own official licenses for that, IMO they are playing a risky business by demonstrating this publicly at shows.
@Mike
Apparently, someone caught that on video. If that’s the case, Apple may not be too happy, especially when these vids are mirrored all over the net.
Especially as Bill Buck (in the eyes of some) came across as smug and smarmy, which would mean there would be a queue of people waiting to post the details up to Apple………..

“It appears that bPlan/Thendic were demonstrating Pegasos systems running MacOSes at the WOASE show. I doubt they own official licenses for that, IMO they are playing a risky business by demonstrating this publicly at shows.”
At least in Germany, Apple’s MacOSX end user license is INVALID. I don’t know about the UK, though.
@Mike Bouma
“A heatsink isn’t even needed for the G3 CPU.”
Maybe, but it’s still highly recommended, even though most of the time I’ve been testing the A1 mobo there was no heatsink (Linux reported the chip running at about 50°C) and I have never had a single HW failure due to overheating. Actually, I’ve never had a single HW failure
Most importantly, Eyetech have made it clear that no heat dissipation = no warranty. Not that the teensy BGA Type B heatsink required as a minimum costs an arm and a leg…
@ anarchic_teapot
It makes sense, a heatsink makes no noise and the added costs are nearly neglectable, yet it may eventually prolong the life of chips exposed to the most harsh conditions, over very long periods of time.
Well that maybe the case. But you can bet your bottom dollar that Thendic don’t have the money to be dragged through court _anywhere_ else by Apple.
Putting aside any ‘issues’ with the MorphOS/ Amiga Inc stuff, they’re messing with a big boy now.
It’s easy to be seen as a big fish in a (very) small pond, take a swim in the ocean and it’s a completely different matter.
-john
@Andre
” At least in Germany, Apple’s MacOSX end user license is INVALID. I don’t know about the UK, though.”
Valid in the UK.
Except Apple could not possibly see Thendic as a threat
so its a fuss/mudslinging over nothing.
