This is a review of the Solaris the new movie with George Clooney. Did you read the article before posting?
The funny thing is that you don’t get the joke.
hah! Tim, get this, you made a fool of yourself ;o))))
I was right! George Clooney is going to star in the next release of Solaris! Man, Sun is really in deep shit if this is their ploy to get more market share. Oh well. I hear it’s going to be cheap, though. Only $8.50 according to MovieFone.com (man, that decision of selling UNIX over the Internet is really…different…from their movie business). Well, it will be interesting.
And you know the funnier thing? Sun has a special event for journalists and others on Tuesday in San Francisco, where they will show in a special screening the movie!! I am invited. I might be able to get a few newsbits about Solaris!
BTW, Happy ThanksGiving everyone!!
Happy Thanksgiving!
I certainly didn’t get the joke. Just shows how dense I can be sometimes.
Mario,
Not every Canadian is as arrogant as that. There are ~30 million people up here. We don’t all think alike. Just because I live in a socialist society doesn’t mean I am a socialist either. I also don’t think George Bush is a moron. However, I can’t say the same about our Prime Minister.
How can you not think Mr.TriggerFinger is a moron?!?!
Hehehe, great joke! I actually went to CNN page. At first I was really curious why this article is in the ENTERTAINMENT section… Thought that the world is changing really fast these days Don’t know what is it about, but… happy thanksgiving to you all!!!
If you’re not talking about some stupid Clooney film or UNIX, nobody cares.
Clooney said Solaris is not going to sell too well …
It out 2001s 2001. It out X-Files the X-Files.
I never realized that there was another sci-fi writer as intelligent as Philip K. Dick, perhaps even moreso (Stanislaw Lem, currently 81 years old). Got to take a look at his writings sometime.
Of course, I mean famous sci-fi writers in my above comment. I realize that there is plenty of writing talent out there in the world if you know where to look, and many unsung heroes.
Ever seen Rick Mercer’s special “Talking to Americans”….hehe…
Bush may not be a moron, but he sure looks and sounds like one 90% of the time.
Cretien IS a moron, but at one time he was not.
We have way better beer than americans too.
and finally, ever see Jerry Springer? Ive always thought that the guests on that show were a pretty good cross section of your avreage american.
so there.
morons.
Philip K. Dick and Stanislaw Lem are much more popular in Europe than they are in USA, so I have been told.
Hey, the Sci-Fi Channel is having an all day ‘”X Files” Chain Reaction’!!
Happy thanksgiving to you Canucks, too ;o)
P.S. I have no problem with Canadians, jsut when they think they’re much superios to America. One of my best friends is a Canadian.
We don;t think we’re superior to Americans, we just have better beer
In some cases, beer can be used as currency up here
I am skeptical of this beer claim. Have you tried them all, even the microbrews? Settling this matter will require rigorous and thorough testing…
Hey, never went to belgium eh? We have the best beer in the world, no denying about that. It’s a hard fact! And no, I haven’t tasted them all yet, there’s just too many of them.
I can see Sun getting George Clooney into their big iron, how about workstations? Its awlfully small in there.
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!
““Windows” might have at least left us with some campy giggles, but it’s too distasteful to laugh at.”

monty
WOW HOW FUNNY! LOL LOL LOL, not…
Don’t know much about Canadian or American beer, but must agree with ‘element’ on that — here in Europe surely there is no better brew than Belgian one. I only wish there were more of it east of Berlin where i’m coming from…
good night to all of you
Zbyszek
@Zbyszek
Just look towards south and taste some tchech beer. This is also very tasty. And I have to say that even the lousiest polnish beer is still better then Millers or Budwiser, though the ads for the Budwiser are pretty cool. Whaaasss Uuuup
Greetings from Germany (the country with propably the most variations of beer)
Sorry for trolling but I just couldnt resist
This is a strange place to talk about beer, but i find the discussion quite amusing – so here’s my contribution.
Even though there’s not too much positive about my country, I can without a doubt say that German beer is definetely a scorer. And Krombacher is by far the best. Oh well, but it all depends.
For most people “Bud” is the equivalent of “American Beer”, and Bud just can’t be compared with any German beer.
So long then, greetings from Dortmund, the city where 90% of all citizens can claim: “My neighbour’s a brewer!”
for real theres nuthin better than a a good ol’ pint of mcaffreys stout… and then we have that polish beer…that always knocked me flat off my feet
btw everyone laughed at me when i two years ago said that there would probably be a remake of lem’s solaris movie…muahahaha who is having the last laugh now
I bet Clooney will be the chief-engineer of Sun’s Linux
____
P.S.
I also don’t think George Bush is a moron.
Of course he is not a Moron ! He is the King of “Super Morons”, and, morally, a pig.
The best beer in world is in the Czech Republic:-) It’s actually a national drink. In 2000 the consumption was 161 litres(~322 o.5l beers) per person(infants included). The Germans with about 130 litres were far behind:-)
Is really a great description for both the movie and the OS from Sun.
I thought it was a review on Sun Solaris 9….WTF!!!
I agree with those who said that Belgian beer is the best. My favorites are Duvel and Leffe Brune 6, both are magnitudes better than any north american beer.
As for Canadians/Americans, here’s something nice that many here are probably familiar with:

Prog.
Popups on osnews.com? This is what you’ve resorted to? Of all the annoyances in the world.. you chose popups to advertise? Why?
Completely disagree. German beer is the best. Clausthaler is my brand of choice
What do yanks know about beer? they drink that hairy-fairy cocktail rubbish.
Not as much as Russia and Vodka it flows through the city like water
beer-Although us Americans have some wonderful microbrew, I have to say that was knocked flat (figuratively and literally) by the German brew. Even the cheap stuff is outstanding. We do, however, have the best beer advertising in the world.
Undoubtably, to settle this question once and for all, more research is required.
Happy Turkey Day
The Arbiter
= classic film…

You should feel ashamed if you haven’t figured out that Bush is a moron but you don’t need to apologize for being Canadian. You all may have a socialist society but at least you have a democratically elected leader. Wanna trade passports?
moron is french for “Coke snorting, drunk driving, election fixing genius”… did you know that? Canada is bilingual remember, either way, some might be of the opinion both terms would apply…
I can’t stand beer. Give me the tequila
American beer? Canadian beer? Thank <deity of preferance> I live in Europe…:-))))
Yes!
Beer haters the world over unite, under the wonderfull flag of Tequila!
why dabbel with imitations?
go with the original beer -> Pilsner Urguell
I got the joke but suprised with 42 posts.
You should feel ashamed if you haven’t figured out that Bush is a moron but you don’t need to apologize for being Canadian. You all may have a socialist society but at least you have a democratically elected leader. Wanna trade passports?
Why the hell should I feel ashamed? And I didn’t apologize for being Canadian. I love being Canadian. As far as Bush being a moron, the lexical definition of the word moron is:
a person of borderline intelligence in a former classification of mental retardation, having an intelligence quotient of 50 to 69.
He may not be very articulate, and is possibly trigger happy, but he is hardly a moron.
As far as Canada being free….tell that to the wheat farmers in the western provinces who MUST sell their wheat to the Canadian wheat board for prices set by the Canadian Wheat Board. If they sell it to anyone else they go to jail.
Our charter of rights and freedoms states as one of our fundamental freedoms:
freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication
Yet I can go to jail for saying something that others may be offended by (Hate Speech).
And lastly, our senate is APPOINTED by the Prime Minister.
A democracy is meaningless if the country doesn’t guarantee respect and protection of individual liberty.
You know you’re reading something on the internet when:
1. The discussion degenerate from Solaris to Canadian beer to morons.
.
.
.
You know you’re Canadian when:
1. You think beer with less than 6% alchohol is for the old, sickly and infirm.
2. You live in a country where we manage to elect someone who cannot speak either of the official languages properly, as prime minister.
PS. Bush IS a moron, but so is Cretien.
Clausthaler????????
You mean Claustaler ALKEHOLFREI(without it …)??
I prefer drinking real beer like BECKS or Warsteiner!
-A
Bush is a moron. But what do you want from a guy who lost the popular vote but considers winning the electoral college a mandate to declare war anywhere he pleases.
Jean Cretien wishes he was Trudeau… but even Pierre started to lose it near the end.
What was that old joke… PETRO Canada.
I’m going to be flamed for this for this being so far off-topic, but then I didn’t expect this kind of political bloody-shirt-waving on OSAlert. I didn’t bring this up, but somebody has apparently wandered over here from DemocraticUnderground.com.
If Bush is such a moron, then how could he have convinced so many people around the country to vote Republican and to put the Congress (both houses) back into Republican hands? If he’s so stupid, then why haven’t we had any more 9/11-type incidents since 9/11/01? He must be doing SOMETHING right. And what is this about Bush wanting to wage war anywhere at any time for any reason? We haven’t even started shooting at Saddam yet; the only place where we’ve really waged war is Afghanistan, where we routed the Taliban and the local al-Qaeda establishment.
Sorry, but I think Americans finally have a President they can look up to for the first time in years, somebody who has proven himself to be on our side, and it annoys me to read this nonsense about Bush being stupid.
Why didn’t you have any 9/11 type incidents BEFORE 9/11/01 either?
There’s a lot to be said for not being governed by morons makes you a lot safer…
Doing something right does not exclude being a moron… most (all?) non-americans won’t like him because he so blatantly disregard non-US interests… and that’s why I also think he’s a moron (well, when one sees the blunders he commits, we non-Americans may have a point actually)
By the way I’m half-German and will defend that country’s beer to the last! But try Japanese and Korean beer, it’s different if anything, and easier to drink in large quantities, although that my have to do with Asians’ genetic incapacity to take alcohol – no flame here, this is scientifically proven, and all the better for them because they can get drunk in London for less than GBP 20 at least
“How can you not think Mr.TriggerFinger is a moron?!?!”
Now this shows who the moron is. Reverting to name calling especially when you have no idea what you are talking about.
-G
For the love of god its CHRETIEN.
Yeah he’s an idiot, but at least get his name right. Especially those who ARE Canadian.
hrmph.
Why didn’t you have any 9/11 type incidents BEFORE 9/11/01 either?
Actually, we had at least three: (1) the first attempt in 1993 to topple the World Trade Center, (2) the Oklahoma City bombing (apparently there’s evidence that people from the Middle East, possibly even Iraq, were involved somehow in that), and (3) the attack on the USS Cole — an American warship. If your country attacks another country’s warship, then your country has waged war against the other country. (I’m not even counting such things as the attack on Americans in Khobar Towers, Saudi Arabia, in 1996.) Of course, these incidents occurred on the watch of the “non-moron” who occupied the White House for eight years, not the supposed “moron” who was on the job for only nine months as of 9/11. It was the “moron” who said enough was enough and decided to do something about the people who kept popping up and carrying out these attacks.
[M]ost (all?) non-americans won’t like him because he so blatantly disregard non-US interests…
Bush is the AMERICAN president, after all; his job is to look out for American interests. It is the job of the British government to look out for British interests, the job of the Canadian government to look out for Canadian interests, and so on. What’s the problem?
I’m not American, so he doesn’t protect my interests, therefore he has to be
“If Bush is such a moron, then how could he have convinced so many people around the country to vote Republican and to put the Congress (both houses) back into Republican hands?”
Well, thats because he didn’t put the house back in GOP hands, as they ahd the house. the GOP took the senate, and that’s because of the depress the black vote RNC campaign. (In the old days of the South they had the KKK to do it, now instead of bedsheets they use suites, it’s a shame they get away with it)
Bush bungled every single thing he tried and his approval ratings were slipping faster than an republican’s during their impeachment of Clinton. Sept 11 2001 saved his Presidency.
[T]he GOP took the senate, and that’s because of the depress the black vote RNC campaign. (In the old days of the South they had the KKK to do it, now instead of bedsheets they use suites, it’s a shame they get away with it)
What “depress-the-black-vote RNC campaign”? How did the RNC manage that? More likely a lot of Democrat voters got disgusted with the way too many in Congress were tying the President’s hands when it was clear the President was doing all he could to work with Congress and the UN to wage this war on the terrorist groups of the world and to protect this country, as any President should. Of course, that ridiculous political rally that was supposed to be a memorial for and tribute to Sen. Wellstone (“WE WILL WIN!!! WE WILL WIN!!! WE WILL WIN!!! Oh, look, Governor Ventura and a Republican senator came to pay their respects — BOO THEM!”) probably turned a lot of voters off, too. Blame the Democrats for that one.
Bush bungled every single thing he tried and his approval ratings were slipping faster than an republican’s during their impeachment of Clinton. Sept 11 2001 saved his Presidency.
Yeah, and here it is over 14 months later, and the “bungler” STILL has terrific approval ratings. So Bush “bungled every single thing he tried” between January and September 2001, yet after September 2001, the country still likes and trusts him. So either (1) Bush suddenly grew a brain on or after 9/11/01, or (2) Bush STILL “bungled every single thing he tried” after 9/11/01, but the country just loves him anyway and doesn’t care, or (3) Bush really DIDN’T “bungle every single thing he tried.” Choice #3 sounds the most reasonable to me.

and the best beer is the danish, followed closely by the mexican and of course the portuguese, the worse beer has to the british beer (no bubbles?) and the spanish.
I’m staying away from the politics….
So here’s my best beer producers vote:
1)Czech
2)Belgium
3)German
Not many have tried Czech beer, so I can understand why it doesn’t have many votes. Let me tell you, Amercian beer just can’t compete with the three I listed, no way. Once you’ve been to these countries and tried some real stuff Coors, Bud, Miller, etc… just don’t cut it!
@sagres
My vote on crappy Spanish beer, they make some great wine and sherry, but you buy buy a six pack of their beer and you get six different flavors of crap!
(We (Amercians) do have a few good microbrews though, but they are hard to come by!)
The reason so many of us Europeans loved president Bill Clinton was his willingness to HELP.
I’m British – and we owe him a debt for his work in Northern Ireland where he helped bring about a peace which although imperfect is lasting – peace in a region that has been unstable for 4 centuries. He also tried to help – less successfully though of no fault of his own – in Israel, his address to the israeli people after the assassination of President Rabin was truly Brilliant
President Bush is an American statesman.
President Clinton was a World statesman.
CNN reviewing Solaris…the operating sys…hmmm that’s something new… Whoa!!!…what’s this???? … Heh heh he. You got me on this.
This movie makes Kubrick’s 2001 seems obvious in comparison.
Solaris is quite the head scratcher. My wife and I sat in a bit of a fog after the movie trying to understand what the message or plot was about. Whereas 2001 was a large view of humanity and technology, Solaris is kernel debugging time. It is internal to the human psyche and much of the movie consists of looooong face shots where I presume you are to ponder what is being thought or contemplated. Clooney’s face is not quite up to the job IMO as I found it a bit tedious and plodding trying to care what was going on inside him. I always think of Clooney as a decisive character and yet in this role his decisiveness is all tangled up with his internal struggles we are drawn into this fog as well.
After the movie I was left wonder why Clooney would take such a role and further why anyone would make such a movie or for that matter bother to pay to see it. So I was left feeling a bit like a moron for going to see it and then wondered off in search of a good brew.
S.Lem is not only “sci-fi” writer. He has non-fiction novells, and he is rather philospoher.
In early 60-s (IIRC) he wrote absolutely fundamental work “SUMMA TECHNOLOGIAE”. Dunno if it was fully translated into English, but here are some pieces from it: http://www.frankpr.net/Lem/Summa/contents.htm
Must read for any geek.
Learn your facts the DemoFarmer’s didn’t boo “Governor Ventura”.
As a unreformed liberal condemned the democratic-Farmer Labor Party for politicizing the memorial service, as did most neoliberals.
Next, learn your facts before opening your mouth. The decrease in the African American turnout as well as white turnout gave the republicans the election. The RNC has memos on decreasing the blackvote, the Republicans on the hill claim its “politics”. Ya right.
No bush did not stop bungling, he stopped proposing. Instead he x2 SEC budget and when CNN stops covering it he lets the bill die in committee! War helps any president, and with republicans claiming liberal dissention is unpatriotic we are paralyzed from fear.
Take Cleveland, a Vietnam vet who doesn’t have his arm, votes against the war, bam he loses the senate race w/ the republicans claiming he is a communist!
“After the movie I was left wonder why Clooney would take such a role and further why anyone would make such a movie or for that matter bother to pay to see it.”
The opinions of people like you aren’t important for a film like this. When it was first released in 1969, Kubrick’s 2001 was widely panned by the critics in newspapers everywhere, talking pretty much just like you, and today it is an undisputed classic in filmmaking in general, not just in the sci-fi genre.
In fact, Solaris is getting a lot of favorable reviews right now, probably better than 2001 got in its day – http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/Solaris-1118327/reviews.php
Maybe some POS movie like “Swordfish” is more your level of entertainment. Go for it.
