“Every few months I make a pilgrimage to the Sysinternals website to look at its superb collection of tools. It’s now hosted inside the Microsoft Technet monster since its authors joined Microsoft as employees some while ago, but the value of their site is still as strong as ever and the tools are now guaranteed not to be ignored or left to rust.”
…have saved my life on more than one occasion when I was writing lower level stuff for Windows.
I’m mainly doing Mac stuff now, I wonder if they would consider writing some of their tools for OS X
Fat chance of that as they are part of the Microsoft behmoth.
Don’t think that has too much to do with it, They didn’t write any OS X tools when they were independent, which they were for many years.
They are Windows guys, and always have been.
Amongst their excellent other tools like pskill, you may want to look at power defragmenter from sysinternals.
While the interface is basic, using this tool is as good as any defragmenter you can pay for and it will defrag your hard drive 100%. Simply do a defragment analysis using the normal windows tools before and after and you will see this result.
They also have another superb tool called Autoruns which can tell you where applications start up no matter where they launch from (and disable them!).
Morglum
I used to install autoruns and process explorer on every box I did.
Well, I still do! (besides my own boxes, on all friends and relatives that lament weirdneww/slowness/viruses)
I emphasize installing Linux now, and hardly do any Windows work anymore.
“now guaranteed not to be ignored or left to rust”
Still waiting for PageDefrag to support Vista, Windows 7 or 64bit Windows, and have had difficulties getting it to work with hibernation files. Unfortunately it was left to rust – it hasn’t been updated since 2006.
