This is a little bit off the beaten track for OSAlert, but hey, it’s about science fiction and it’s funny. “This month, ‘Battlefield Earth’, the blockbuster bomb based on the novel by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, won the Razzie for ‘Worst Movie of the Decade’. J.D. Shapiro, the film’s first screenwriter, accepted the award in person. Shapiro, who also wrote the screenplay for ‘Robin Hood: Men in Tights’, ‘We Married Margo’, and is developing a King Arthur spoof called ‘524 AD’, explains what it’s like to be attached to one of Hollywood’s most notorious flops.”
I don’t mean to undermine J.D. Shapiro’s achievement, but while the aware is for “Worst Movie of the Decade”, the worst movie “ever” (as stated in the title) accolade belongs to the film Bell Labs named their OS after: “Plan 9 from Outer Space”
The movie quotes on IMDB highlight just how funny (and a bad way) this movie is.
Pah. As if Plan 9 could best so-bad-it’s-funny classics like The Room and Troll 2 (if you like bad movies, WATCH THESE!). Or even so-bad-it’s-not-even-funny movies like Hobgoblins (which I think is FAR more unwatchable). I mean, Plan 9 deserves respect for basically starting the trend of watching bad movies for fun, but it is by no means the worst.
That might be true, but anything that puts the scientology scam in a bad light is a good thing.
Oh come on, Scientology isn’t a scam, it’s for enlight… Ok, I couldn’t even finish typing that. It’s so very much a scam.
Although sadly so many other religions are scams as well, though Scientology is one I just don’t classify as a religion, and it should only be classified as a scam.
Too be honest, I think Battlefield Earth might be worse than Plan 9 if not for any other reason than Ed Wood obviously had no budget (but at least loved making movies) and BE had $100 millions and a big name cast and still fscked it up.
In fact, quite a few movies are worse than Plan 9, such as Manos.
Heh. Plan 9 is a walk in the park compared to “The Room”. That film is so unintentionally bad it makes Ed Woods masterpiece look competent.
Besides, the worst kind of bad film is boring-bad. I’ve seen more than a few of those — Invasion of the Neptune Men comes to mind.
You and I are kindred spirits on this subject, it seems.
oh yeah, I’ve heard about The Room and it’s unintentional hilarity. Haven’t watched it yet though.
I agree, nothing is worse than a bad movie that’s also boring. Hmmm…BE isn’t actually boring.
They actually play it regularly in my local theater — right next to Rocky Horror.
If you do plan to watch it, you might want to pick up the rifftrax for it too. It’s some of their best work.
I caught it one night on Cartoon Network. “WTF, where are 21, Dean, and Orpheus?!” So I checked it out on IMDB, thus finding it was supposed to be one of the worst ever. I sat through most of it, wasting time on the ‘net as I did so…and yeah, it’s as bad as it is made out to be.

The main character (dude with the hair and the voice) is also the writer, producer, and director. Oh yeah, and it cost over 6mil to produce.
The budget isn’t the problem. You have to remember the film was shot in the 50s (IIRC under the title of “Grave Robbers From Outerspace”), so it’s going to look cheap by todays standards.
The problem is the acting, dialog, direction and so on.
Ed Wood monumentally fsck up, he was just lucky that his mistakes gave the film had an unintentional funny element which has redeemed it over the years.
And that’s why it’s not the worst movie ever.
Hilariously bad dialog? Check.
Bad SFX? Oh yeah.
Bad acting? you bet
Boring. No.
Boring movie’s are the worst.
I’m not disputing your logic, however Plan 9 still won the Golden Turkey award for “Worst Film Ever”.
Hence my point about Plan 9 holding said accolade (regardless of personal judgement) is correct :p
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_films_considered_the_worst#Pla…
What makes you think Golden Turkey is right? Just saying.
I never said it was, I just said Plan 9 has that accolade.
Jeez your in an argumentative mood today
Sure, Plan 9 was poorly done, but I think Manos Hand of Fate was a lot worse. Plan 9 is probably so notorious only because it was Bela Lugosi’s last film. Then again, maybe I’m biased cuz I watched “Ed Wood” by Tim Burton a week back
Ahhh, the film may be horrible, but the rifftrax of it is pure gold.
Kevin Costner. I mean 3 freaking hours for a western!!!. After two hours I just left, my mind was achingly dull from that.
Wild Wild West and Mars Attacks are the worst two films I’ve ever seen.
Oh, that and some weird sequel to Being John Malcovitch.
You’re thinking of Adaptation.
Yes, that sucked big time.
Aye, that was the word I after. Thank you.
Mars Attacks is awesome.
I don’t know wtf you’re talking about.
I liked both wild wild west and mars attacks.
worst moviue ever must now be motherhood
only one ticket sold for the premiere in UK
I was thinking you were referring to this horrible movie I saw with Nicole Kidman, but that one was called Birth, that has to be one of the worse movies ever.
Another I would nominate;
War of the Worlds (the new one with Tom Cruise!)
The movie basically called everyone who watched it a moron within the first 10 minutes, then continued to completely screw up what could have been awesome.
