At MineCon in Las Vegas yesterday and today, Mojang has officially released Minecraft 1.0, signalling the end of the phenomenon’s alpha and beta testing phase. It’s been an interesting journey, and I’ve been playing the game since early summer 2010 – so it’s weird to see it hit final now. Game of the year? Well, no, that title obviously goes to Skyrim – but for a game like Minecraft to be even considered for such a title is amazing enough. Thanks, Notch and the rest of the Mojang team!
Tried it and… Don’t get the hype. Yeah you have to work for rewards so that you could create amazing stuff and it wouldn’t be so popular if you got all materials without work, yada yada. Still…
Did you try it in multiplayer with a bunch of friends, while chatting on skype or whatever? That’s when it gets fun.
Exactly. I run my own Minecraft server and play with friends. It’s awesome.
Well this way every game is fun. Personally we play Gears or Halo co-ops on highest difficulty. Nowadays – Battlefield 3 multiplayer.
So kinda weak argument.
There is a Creative mode, now, you know. You can build whatever you want, however you want, out of anything you want. Or you could just add an inventory editor mod.
I’m a Minecraft fan, but I can totally understand not being into it. It’s not for everybody. I agree that they could add more parts of the game to make it interesting for a wider audience. Some of us are okay just taking advantage of the sandbox aspect and building our own empires and exploring. Others are happy about the (admittedly half-assed) RPG elements that have been added.
Alternatively, there are also a ton of mods that add things to the game to suit your tastes. It’s almost like a platform for making your own game (and Notch would do well to realize this and make a solid mod API). There are mods that add RPG elements, puzzle elements, additional blocks and goals, etc. Whatever you want, there’s probably a mod for it.
Hopefully they’ll continue to work on the game and fix the bugs that still exsit. The double door bug that closes, open, closes and then opens the otherside is kind of annoying when trying to escape from monsters.
And the the bug that leaves still statue monsters randomly around the world could be frustrating.
Other then that, I can see Minecraft having quite a lot more to offer if Notch and his team can save themselfs from adding gimicky things to the game. They’ve done pretty well so far all things considered.
A proper (multiplayer) plugin API would be nice, I think that is something everyone is looking for but I’d like to see a few other things that really can only come from Mojang.
– profile enabled friend and server list.
Much like our managed server list in Mincraft now, I’d like to the ability to add a server to our profile on minecraft.net and then the minecraft client download the server list so we don’t have to keep updating it if we did a clean install. Also, the ability to friend a username on your profile and see the last server they were playing on and how long ago. Again this could be included in Minecraft client and we’d beable to just hop on the same server as them.
– Guild Titles
Giving us the option to create and join guild names on minecraft.net with a nice managed interface for guild admins to simply add or remove usernames. Support for Character Cloaks would be nice, but really not too bothered about this one. I know some might argue aganst this, but I’d pay a few euros to create a guild title.
– Achivements
I think this is long over due. Minecraft has added basic support for achivements, but they’re not sync’d with minecraft.net. They need to add a lot more achivements, even basic ones like mine 500 stone blocks, gather 50 iron, 10,000 stone, 100 iron or make it to 50days on hardcore mode, kill 50 creepers on hardcore mode etc. This could be so to connect to facebook as an App to spam friends with too, it just seems like a missed oppertunity for them.
There is lots more stuff I really hope they add to the backend of minecraft, and its what the community can’t do on their own.
Really enjoy minecraft, Its the most played game in my house.
There are people that actually like ‘achievements’?
The Achievements, as they are in Minecraft, are the closest people get to any real in-game direction, and sometimes give clues on how to make certain things without having to delve into the wiki. I don’t think people want “Smelt a million iron ingots” to be an achievement, but I do think the achievements for building certain tools and such are good.

What is “to like”? Possibly… a ~”positive” emotional response (generally emotions, anticipation and/or avoidance of them, is what drives us to do to anything, starting with getting off the bed in the morning), which modifies our behaviour?
Well, “gamification” ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamification a nice example: http://www.fitocracy.com/ ) apparently works rather well to motivate humans, they respond positively to it.
Only, who knows where it leads… http://www.smbc-comics.com/index.php?db=comics&id=2286#comic (to ve fair, it’s not like we don’t have something roughly similar already, entwined within our social constructs, just evolved in a bit roundabout way; see, it works)
The Witcher 2 is GOTY or Deus Ex HR or…
So 1.9 pre-release is actually the full version?
Hmmm… Oh man, there can be lot added- especially because it became more like an RPG since 1.8; so i am a bit disappointed.
I think 1.9rc2 was released as v1.0.0 there was never a public 1.9x pushed to users.

Never heard of it. Looks like a cancelled super nintendo game
Geek card revoked.
Eh, Quid Est Geek?
Is not a geek one who relishes otherwise obscure technological pleasures?
Then, what would you call one whom in pursuit of far more obscure technological pleasures, say hacking yon kernel of extreme unction, may in his geekery miss a more popular item of technicality? Is said one, not even more of a geek? I posit thusly.
If you frequent this site, and haven’t heard of Minecraft – something has gone terribly wrong
Note: one need not have played it, just heard of it.
Not every geek has time to visit this site or read all of the articles posted here.
But that’s my point – if you come here at all, I have a pretty hard time believing you’ve never heard of Minecraft…whether from here specifically, or well, EVERYWHERE ON THE INTERNET.
In any case, you took it way too seriously – it was obviously a joke.
You didn’t pick up on ye olden style of speeche as a sarcasm clue? Ah, well, next time I’ll go full Middel Angelish.
Truth is, geeks who call themselves geeks and try to define who is and who is not a geek are essentially the same as hipsters.

How!? It… I mean…
I envy you.
I’ve heard of it but I didn’t try playing.
this was the last thing I made in Minecraft before burning out a bit

fun game though, definitely got my money’s worth before then
Impressive. I didnt get anywhere near that before I got bored with it
I watched the video, and I have to say that that is an amazing structure you have there.
That’s what she said.
Hey, there are loads of Minecraft clones out there. Some of them are different, like a Minecraft shooter/CTF game and less sandboxy or at least more goal oriented games. Just wanted to mention it, because some of them have very interesting concepts.
A list:

More specifically, Minecraft itself seems to be a clone, too ;p http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zachary_Barth#Infiniminer
