Sony announced last night that it’s spinning off its audio and video divisions, much like it spun off its television division last year. That won’t mean much right now; Sony still displayed interesting new Android-powered TVs at CES, and we’re sure to see new crazy high-end Walkmans and camcorders with Sony branding from the newly independent AV division as well.
But the long-term reality is far more stark: after years of promising “One Sony,” CEO Kaz Hirai appears to be systematically breaking the company up for sale. The VAIO PC division was sold last year and just announced its first hybrid laptops as an independent company, and Hirai told investors that he has to consider spinning off the smartphone business and possibly selling the TV business outright.
From one Sony to no Sony.
This new Sony gadget may save them though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyCtaciiM8Y
Amazing!
“It’s a Sony” nowadays means “It was” vs. implied “It is”. Sigh.
Thom, please… Stop quoting The Verge as a news source. They are terrible at what they do and became the buzzfeed of tech.
Here is the proper quote from Reuters:
“The three pillars that Hirai identified as central to the rebirth of Sony’s electronics division – imaging, gaming and mobile – remain uncertain bets for growth in the highly volatile consumer markets, analysts say.”

+1
and before The Verge it was Digg..
It would be even better if Thom would stop posting at all. I think OSAlert was better off when Thom was on leave. I especially liked David’s posts.
you guys are going too far with these thoughts and words. dial back your fucking crazyish
Where are your articles ?
Yeah… I’m tired of this as well.
Some years ago OSAlert was a great source of news, but now it’s usually just a depressing site quoting others. Also has become a iPad/iOS happy -happy-everything is good-site.
I came here (lots of years ago) for news around operating systems.
I’m leaving now.
If someone could provide a couple of sites with good, technical /interesting articles about OSes i would actually appreciate. i come here out of “inertia” mainly.
Well, one about general OS internals or development is not easy to find. Most of the technical sites cover one kind, i.e., or it covers MS Windows, or Apple, or Linux, or BSDs. For Windows the usual suspect is msdn.microsoft.com, for iOS and OS X it is developer.apple.com. For FOSS it is scattered, it all depends on what you want to do, for kernel development go to kernel.org and/or linuxfoundation.org. To me the best development toolkit on FOSS world is Qt and you will find good tutorials for it. For specific applications you better go to the project site, sometimes you may need to ask the maintainers for directions.
Now, if what you want is not very specific, my favorites are:
– lwn.net – mostly about FOSS, best part is the comments section. Good moderation, many knowledgeable commentators and low troll presence;
– theregister.co.uk – about tech. Most of the articles are good and the shameless english cynicism on both articles and comments are a plus;
– anandtech.com – hardware. If you like hardware analysis you will like the site;
– semiaccurate.com – hardware. Great to read about what may be comming (new tech);
– opensource.com – I guess you know what it is about;
– linuxjournal.com – well, that is an easy guess too;
– tomshardware.com – hardware analysis and tech news. Still like to read it from time to time.
I know it is not what you asked but, perhaps, you may end up enjoying some of the above sites.
thanks! i think i will unfortunately redirect osnews.com to a simple html site with those links to actually get news about technology withou things about the grand canyon or absurd/black&white opinions… sad that this website has come to this…
Wake up, people.
25 years ago we actually had all sorts of OS’es to talk about.
Nowadays we have iOS, Android and Windows (Phone) on mobile devices;
Windows and MacOS X on desktops (Linux fails to register, sorry);
Linux, Windows and FreeBSD on servers.
Linux/QNX on embedded devices.
All other OS’es are either dormant or more or less dead. What’s there to report, seriously?
Go to Neowin to read all about Windows.
Go to LWN/Phoronix to read about Linux.
Go to, oops, there are no popular websites to report on FreeBSD.
Go to GSMArena to read everything about mobile OS’es.
Android related news are pretty much everywhere (most notable mentions are Android Police and GSMArena).
Besides, who cares about irrelevant OSes that are used by two thousand people in the whole world (Haiku, MenuetOS for instance)?
I^A've never posted anything on osnews up until now. But I feel I should because I do care about irrelevant OSes. I am no OS developer myself, I am not even a real pro programmer but I like the idea that there are people who try to make a difference. That there are people who do not care that ifruitOS and greenRobotOS are already dominating our digital lives and give it their own try even with little outlook to succeed. It makes me feel better because I often have the feeling that capitalistic-misantropic corporations actually do not give a s**t about you as a user. And even if those “pathetic” people or companies who try to do it their way fail it is better than have not done anything at all – at least they tried.
That being said, I must admit that you are right that actually no more discussions and reports are necessary. The OS “wars” seem to be pretty much over. Everybody go home now, nothing left to see! But the romantic, nostalgic little boy in me will urge me to keep coming here. He wants to read the often enlighting discussions and the often great selection of links Thom is not getting tired to provide. And who knows: empires fall – maybe do iFruits and greenRobots and the one from… i forgot the name… and then we will discuss here again for good reason.
Ahem, the Reuters article you linked is exactly 1 year old. We are in 2015 now, remember?

Probably meant http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/02/18/us-sony-strategy-idUSKBN0…
Who knew? Sony’s financial service (insurances and banking) is huge.
I know OSAlert is not really a “news” (as in traditional meaning) media company but I think we all would appreciate a little better investigative actions about polemical subjects.
We all like most of “whatsoever make tech things” here but the quality of some sites are so low these days that some more care before echoing its contents is worthwhile.
(OK, I know, it is not just “these days”, most of the press has been biased and low quality since forever but I like to “pretend” that it was better some time ago, just to poke some fun to the young less cynical guys)
They could always stay in business simply selling snake-oil to audiophools; http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015/02/sony-will-sell-a-premium-sou…

And their rootkit treachery. No, I still haven’t forgiven them for that, and I doubt I ever will. So I grin an evil little grin when I read news like this.
From technological company to media company is a clear degradation.
