Three state treasurers and a top official from New York have joined a shareholders’ motion to install an independent chairman at Facebook, claiming the move would improve governance and accountability.
[…]
The move comes as Facebook was presented with a new legal challenge. The technology company has been accused of misleading advertisers by inflating the viewing figures for videos on its site.
A group of US advertisers launched a fraud claim against the social media giant on Tuesday, stating that it had overstated the average viewing time of advertising videos on the site by between 100 and 900pc before reporting them in 2016.
All tech companies are pretty terrible as far as companies go, but Facebook really seems to be going out of its way to lead the pack. As far as I’m concerned, we shut it down. Would anyone really miss it?
Meanwhile, my father once, after some news about FB in the TV, presented Zuckerberg as an ideal at being succesfull among my age-peers to which I should aspire…
I think I’m better than that.
Not anyone who cares and is informed and has good ethics.
There’s a lot of people that will miss it especially if they do business there.
I have absolutely no fuzzy unicorn feelings for Facebook as a company, but it is the only service where I can stay semi up-to-date on what happens in the lives of people i don’t meet or communicate directly with very often. There are a million other services that could technically do this, but the users are not there so for me they are useless.
This usecase might not be of any value to you, which is fine, but that doesn’t mean that “anyone who cares and is informed and has good ethics” will not miss it is true. I find that statement naive at best, and arrogant bullshit at worst.
Because, as we all know, Hitler personally killed all the Jews, gypsies and homosexuals himself. He fired all the guns himself and flew every plane and drove every tank. Because only he alone believed all that stuff and committed crimes against humanity.
But seriously, what about that leaked memo from not-Zuckerberg who argued not to worry about ethics? Shouldn’t people like that be “removed”?
Zuck: Yeah so if you ever need info about anyone at Harvard
Zuck: Just ask.
Zuck: I have over 4,000 emails, pictures, addresses, SNS
[Redacted Friend^aEURTMs Name]: What? How^aEURTMd you manage that one?
Zuck: People just submitted it.
Zuck: I don^aEURTMt know why.
Zuck: They ^aEURoetrust me^aEUR
Zuck: Dumb fucks.
Kid like this does not deserve to be CEO. I don’t personally use fb/twitter because I consider them as utter waste of time but these platforms are just magnets for dumb people who don’t have anything better to do just hang out there all day long and read what others wrote. I sadly have a relative who is facebook addict so I’m not surprised they made some clinic in Italy for these people.
I left FB years ago and I do not miss it nor feel I’m worse off for it. In fact, I now have a decent conversation with folk I haven’t spoken to for a while.
.. but then you get into things like entire businesses being built around Facebook (e.g. marketing, customer communities, online presence, etc.), communities of like minded people if only virtually, support networks for those going through some type of trauma, those overseas for work that want to stay regularly in touch with family and friends, etc.
So it’s a yes and no answer really.
Never been on it so I can’t really comment.
But… I have seen at first hand (no names etc) what FB and Twitter can bring about.
The bullying, shaming and everything that went on with Social (sic… antisocial mire like) Media and the end result was not a pretty sight.
No one at these companies even cared that a young person took their own life and blamed social media for it.
They’d stopped using it but it didn’t matter. The feeding frenzy that went on carried on unabated with the inevitable conclusion.
Even then it didn’t stop. Badly photoshopped(generic term and not implying the use of the product itself) pictures of the young woman continued to be posted. These were mostly pretty explicit. Don’t need to say more.
IMHO, the sooner these things go the way of MySpace etc the better.
I’d also make Zuck pay 90% of his worth into a fund to pay for mental healthe care of everyone his [redacted] has affected.
Horrible stuff – but it’s not the platform it’s the people – the same people that would do it anyway without the megaphone that these platforms provide.
Ironically platforms are often built by decent people, who don’t naturally think that people might do this kind of stuff.
In the case of people being hounded to suicide then the people who did it should be gone after and made an example of – not the platform per se.
That’s not to say I’d trust Zuckerberg one inch or like facebook.
Yeah, let’s ‘shut it down’! The government should decide which services are good for people and which bad. The consumers can not decide for themselves. They are obviously too stupid and need to be protected from themselves. We need government planning everywhere so people do not need to think for themselves. They better leave that up to their wise and caring nanny state.
I love commie Thom in the morning
I detest it, but it seems modern day interpersonal communications are impossible without it. There are very many alternatives, but that would be another problem.
Didn’t Facebook and Google use the standard jabber protocol once? I remember chatting with users without having a FB/GG account myself.
Last time I checked they were both still using essentially Jabber/XMPP protocol, it’s just that Google is no longer federated with other Jabber servers (hm, and IIRC FB never was…)
at least that’s what my children tell me.
It’s only the old farts which still use FB.

I use FB every day to keep in contact with journalists, activists, politicians and citizens from all around the world. There simply currently is no better means to get information spread across continents in such a fine grained and fast way.
It has its downsides, like everything that has ever had a chance to exist, but it also has its unrivaled upsides.
So yes, I would really miss it and, with me, millions of other people.
The amount of code and design principles that was used at Facebook and outsourced have pretty much taken over everything software related everywhere.
It’s not that people will miss Facebook or who will lead it at any point but most don’t know what’s behind it all.
Those that will miss it the most will be companies that invested lots of money into it for marketing and client interaction.
The political left will miss it as will the far right
What interests me is how quickly officials have jumped on the ‘dethrone Zuckerburg’ bandwagon after concerns changed from just consumer privacy to capital fraud.
When Facebook seriously breaches the privacy of millions of consumers, Zuckerburg has a nice chat with govt.
When Facebook seriously defrauds other businesses, Zuckerburg must go!
I guess at this point I shouldn’t act surprised that govt values business interests above that of the people.
