Here is a great new, innovative product: a very intelligent 800-pound robot to help you at home, named NS-5. At least this is what the firm “3 Laws Safe” is promising for July 16th this year. The OS used in the humanoid robot is named “Teresa” and the version shipped “will be the 2.1.2. Future OS updates will be available for wireless download 24/7. All NS-5 owners shall receive free OS updates for the lifetime of their personal domestic assistant” their site claims. Now that you have read all this and possibly checked out the pictures of the robot, you might be wondering if all this is true and if our technology is at the point the irobotnow web site promises. Well, this is nothing but some great marketing from FoxFilms for their upcoming movie I,Robot.
Fox launched that web site without stating that this is not a real product or a real situation and there are already many confused people on the net, believing that this is actually a real product. So we thought we should let you know before we get submissions about the wonders of the (non-existant) “Teresa OS”.
Funnily, their TV ad for their “iRobotNow product” is very similar to Apple’s ads, music, theme, direction (especially for the Apple Cube and the iPod ads).
if im not mistken… isn’t that the site for an upcoming movie ?
Is this news really relevant? It’s a fake OS, for a fake robot. Why post it here?
Because:
a. It is fun. (read our Goal on our ContactUs page)
b. Fox has already misguided a lot of people with their marketing, so we make sure we clear it up regarding the OS.
Sweet, I love sci-fi classics put to film! Some may complain about how it is unlike/worse than the book, but to me it’s a supplemental, it doesn’t take anything away from the original, but adds some nice visuals.
Anyone get that file working in mplayer?
that is the coolest promotion I have seen in a while.
it really was like an iPod or Cube commercial….and it worked good, I was like “oooo I want one of those”
I certainly can’t wait for the movie
I watched there commercial just going wtf is this. Obviously it wasn’t real, but I find this kind of thing really anoying. It’s sorta like the simon movie where they tried to make it seam like the actress wasn’t real.
On a differant note, if this was real, I bet the Honda people would have been dumbfounded.
This is the original Brad
i don’t feel like rebooting in windows (once each 3 months is enough for me) anyone with a link, in other format than .mov if possible?
Worked fine with the gxine browser plugin. Streaming and all. Haven’t tried with mplayer.
This fake ad is scary. The website layout and colors are so cold and corporate in a big brother world style.
I immediately thought about Orwell or A.Huxley’s novels.
I thought I was watching one of the anal adverts you see in Total Recall, or BladeRunner. Very chilling.
You never stop learning. I always thought “Perry Rhodan” was the only SF universe claiming anti-matter to be good for computing.
If that robot is so cool, gets energy from sun and water (environmebt friendly !-) The question is – why it needs us, human?
This one is fake, but others will come.
I’m so excited.
This is like when I first saw the Segway.
I can’t wait to get one.
They must have been developing this in secret for the last 20 years. I amazed they managed to keep it quiet for so long.
I bet someone else out there has a real antigravity flying car as well.
A real Positronic Asimov robot will be available this year!
I think an operating system which obeyed the three laws would be a great idea.
1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
Not only would computers be unable to operate weapons, they also would be forced to help save people in danger. Also, all saved files would be backed up to make sure people don’t harm themselves over lost data.
2. A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
So, when I click Save in a dialog box, it actually does it! Many developers, take note.
Further, if I seemed to randomly delete most of my document, then click Don’t Save, it would be smart enough to know I’m making a mistake. After all, letting me delete my work would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
So, a computer would be forced to install the latest anti-virus software, keep its hard drive clean, and remove unruly software. Of course, any Third Law-compatible computer would need explicit instruction from a human to install a program like, say, Outlook Express.*
(Sorry if that line violates OSAlert’ Sixth Law, I just couldn’t help myself)
How should a computer *recognize* an action or inaction as being harmful?
That’s the true trick behind the Asimov laws.
Perhaps it’s the operation of a weapon that prevents many deaths? Perhaps it’s the permanent, unrecoverable *deletion* of a file that saves a live?
And, does the Asimov laws entail only “the righteous”, or would a policemen of next century be unable to fire his computer-controlled weapon because it would harm that person?
Who would implement the judge-and-jury software that tells a computer what is right and wrong?
*Which* Anti-Virus software should be installed? The one provided by the OS vendor (what was that again about free market economy)? Or the best one (which would be…?)?
Sorry, Henry, but your view is too simplistic.
the NS series of robots are found in Asimovs “I, Robot” a collection of short stories about robots (Asimov invented the 3 laws of robotics)…
In the books the NS series is infamous as the one series of robots that have a different version of the 3 laws causing them to harm humans!
Yes, this is an ad for the upcoming movie I, Robot based on Isaac Asimov’s books.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0343818/
VLC played the video part, mplayer the audio part….
Well, as sombody allready mentioned, xine plays both.
How do you save the movie to a file? It just says I don’t have the right plugin.
I’m really looking forward to this, I pray that it doesn’t suck.
The NS-2 was the series of robots in the “Little Lost Robot” story in I, Robot. In that story 12 NS-2 robots were modified (for classified government use) so they lacked the “or through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm” clause of the First Law. One of those robots goes missing (it was ordered to) and hides amongst 62 other unmodified NS-2 robots. Naturally, none of these robots have serial numbers or any other distinguishing traits, for security reasons. The problem is to find the modified NS-2 so they don’t have to distroy all 63.
Depending on how much of the I, Robot universe they observed, I would guess that the NS-5 would be a latter generation of that series.
I’ve read that this movie’s plot revolves around a robot accused of killing a human.
Can anyone say millennium man? (Robin Williams stared in a movie very much like this)
Wow, how disappointing to think that this “giant leap” could have been just around the corner…
