As a BeOS zealot (yes, that is the only zealotry you can accuse me of), I had a big smile on my face when I read Daniel Sandler‘s latest blog entry. “As I am no doubt the last person to point out, Google Maps has added a street level view to (a few) urban areas. It’s the first Google app (besides Picasa) that I’m aware of that requires Flash, but it’s also the first Google app to feature the Be Man. I guess it was only a matter of time, given that there are so many Be alums at Google now. I figured I’d send him home after all this time away.” Thanks to SheepLover.com IsComputerOn.com for pointing this out. Instant update: He lives!
= will conquer the world.
also noticed that a bit back, i really wonder if there was any direct influence. who do we need to interview?
also, i suggest everyone watch the video demo for this product.
there is a live actor as the person icon, very odd
Google Finance also uses flash for the stock charts. Gmail uses flash for sounds for the integrated Talk, as well as the Talk for homepage being completely flash.
Anyway, I wonder wide, how much buzz can happen in the BeOS/Haiku world while having real news quite rearly.
Sometimes I feel like seeing the birth of the community-generated PR.
Funny how you can still see the original BEos icons used just about everywhere.
Great to be reminded of those days when i was running R5 …
My favourite was a replacement for the Psion system application that used BeOS icons heavily, going beyond homage.

I still have a 5mx gathering dust, i should load this up and give it a try.
The 5mx is another example of a great product gone bad imho. I love the design, i love the form factor. The resolution is pretty impressive for it’s age too. Not to mention … EPOC kicks ass.

Heh, yeah – I keep seeing them in the most unexpected places. I’ve seen the BeOS icons used in ‘net cafe management apps, Point-of-Sale apps, and I remember using an IRC client in Windows that had distinctly BeOS-esque icons (can’t remember the name now).
(Edit: BersIRC, that was it I think).
Slightly related / slightly-OT: anyone know if the Haiku icons themselves are also licensed under MIT?
